I agree with your post. The last published paper I'm aware of was from 2020. Has there been anything more recent?

I ask because these little spurts of tasks every now and then seem more like throwing a minimum amount kindling on the fire to keep it from going cold. If any actual science has been done over the last several years I'd like to know.

When Boinc Manager read config files I got this in the event log:

4/8/2026 07:11:33 | gpugrid | Your app_config.xml file refers to an unknown application 'ATM'. Known applications: None

That error message used to be more useful than "None". Another computer is running an ATM task now. I see on you Applications page that many projects have tasks running.

What are the "known applications" wrt app_config.xml?

After a decent run of mostly successes, I've had a couple of LLMs error out.
e.g.
Workunit 31492014
Outcome Computation error
Client state Compute error
Exit status 195 (0x000000C3) EXIT_CHILD_FAILED

The behavior was strange in that it loaded 12 GB into the GPU memory, but the GPU remained basically idle until the task errored. The CPU was used for a while, but not the GPU.
I ran an Einstein task just to satisfy myself the the GPU works normally on that project. Of course, LLMs are different.

Help appreciated.

On average I'm getting 2 successes for every errored task. Some of the failures waste over an hour.

I'm impressed with the LLM tasks. Although many different projects' tasks show a GPU utilization of 98% or 99%, the power consumed rarely exceeds 300 watts on my RTX 4090. I've attributed that to the Windows11 OS limitations.

Those LLM tasks often use 400 watts and peak up to 450 watts as reported by MSI Afterburner. I have a watt meter on my system (includes the monitor and network devices) and I see that peak over 620 watts! I've never seen that on any other project, GPUGrid or others.

This question may be premature for the system updates in progress, but I'm getting error msgs re: my app-config which used to be fine.
(I'm running Einstein only now, but when I reboot my PC and restart BOINC it reloads the idle GPUGRID app_config and throws errors.)

What are the correct APP names to use in app_config, e.g.
<name>ATMML</name>
<name>PythonGPU</name>
<name>acemd3</name>
for all apps: ATM, ATMML, ACEMD3 (<--those used to work but throw errors now), and Quantum Chemistry?

That would be my guess. I'm still seeing points on BoincStats from other tasks/projects, including ACEMD3 from here.


Ooops. Not accurate. All the points rcvd in the last 24 hours from from pending Einstein tasks. Nothing from GPUGRID including completed ACEMD3's.

Each project and subproject are so different in terms of computing needs, so I think there is no good way to compare credits. Projects can set higher credits to draw in the volunteer resources they need. Anyway, it's all for fun regarding credits as there is no cash value.


Of course there are differences between the projects and between tasks within projects. The points, however, should be (and I think originally were designed to be) awarded based on the computations completed. Points were originally based on Cobblestones. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOINC_Credit_System

A computer should earn points proportional to it's computations accomplished. More powerful hardware earns points at a higher rate. There shouldn't be another layer of points awarded because the tasks are difficult or take a long time - that's already accounted for.

Today, I've so far had 3 tasks which were "aborted by server" after several hours' runtime. Which is not really nice.
If the team decides that certain types of tasks are no longer needed, they should delete them from the distribution pool before they are sent out, instead of having us volunteeers crunch them for hours before stopping them.

I came here to report exactly the same thing.

Two were a relatively quick 'Error while computing' - perhaps around the 5% mark.


Something is strange. The work queue was over 800 tasks yesterday, now it's 7.

How come that this happens that often? Is there not any kind of automated reporting early enough (say, once the disk is 80% full), or other measures that prevent this problem to happen every few weeks ? This shouldn't be that difficult to implement.


Kinda ironic. They are super anxious to get this project completed so they award 10X the points the tasks deserve, therefore attract an army of crunchers, but then don't keep their hardware up to speed to support the effort.

I just started ATMML yesterday. Out of seven starts only one completed. The rest errored-out after 1-1.5 hours. Windows11/RTX4090.

I'd like to get some actual work done...
