AMD GPU Status for 2013?
(Message 28255)
Posted 27 Jan 2013 by Evil Penguin Post: Your HD7970 will do fine at POEM, and Einstein, Albert or Folding would be good backup projects. I haven't really looked at Folding for a long time. The last time I was there I think a high end GPU could only match the performance of a high end CPU, which seemed a bit of a waste to me. Now that both the GPU and CPU clients can handle the same type of work, GPU WUs are using a "unified GPU/SMP benchmarking scheme". http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=22808 A GTX 570 was getting over 150k PPD. Crazy high bump in points. |

AMD GPU Status for 2013?
(Message 28237)
Posted 27 Jan 2013 by Evil Penguin Post: On the bright side... The Folding@home guys at Stanford have been making progress for AMD cards. They have a new lead GPU developer. Latest FAHBench results show that AMD cards are quite capable at processing explicit and implicit WUs (older gen cards and fahcores could only work on implicit WUs). I just want to be able to contribute my GPUs to projects that focus on disease research and not so heavy on the CPU usage. Sadly at the moment POEM@home, GPUGRID and even F@h aren't options for me. :( |

Posted 20 Jan 2013 by Evil Penguin Post: Hi guys/girls, It's been a long while since we've had any news regarding AMD GPU crunching. Surely since the HD 7000 series release a year ago there have been improvements to AMD's OpenCL runtime? |

It's probably going to take a long while for the Linux SDK to catch up and since the devs use Linux mainly... Let's just say I don't expect to see AMD cards as supported until a long time from now. |

Posted 30 Mar 2012 by Evil Penguin Post: Have there been any attempts to get GPUGRID working on the newer API? From the looks of it OCL 1.2 brings a bunch of features and performance improvement over 1.1 and AMD recently released feature compatible version of its drivers for OCL 1.2. The OpenCL 1.2 beta includes the following OpenCL™ 1.2 functionality: Host access flags for memory objects enable more efficient buffer handling and provide added protection. For example, a buffer that is created as “write only” cannot be read from the host. Pattern based GPU buffer and image initialization can help eliminate need for certain buffer/image transfers Memory objects migration supports transfer of buffers prior to need New generalized image creation API Enhanced image/buffer map operations OpenCL 1.2 CPU device partition including partition of a CPU after addition to a context Generalized 1D and 2D images, image arrays, and image<-> buffer interop Libraries support including the separation of compile and link phases and the ability to compile with external symbols Kernel reflection, the ability to query a kernel’s arguments Support for printf as a built in function Source: http://blogs.amd.com/developer/2012/03/23/welcome-to-opencl%E2%84%A2-1-2-check-out-these-beta-drivers-that-contain-a-complete-opencl%E2%84%A2-1-2-solution/ |

Posted 26 Mar 2012 by Evil Penguin Post: We have a small one, good enough for testing. The code works on Windows with some bugs. We are assessing the performance. That's pretty good news. I'm glad that AMD managed to put out three different cores that are GCN based. The cheaper cards still have most if not all of the compute capabilities of the HD 7970. Hopefully there will be a testing app soon and I'll be one of the first in line. ;) |

Posted 23 Mar 2012 by Evil Penguin Post: I wonder how this tweaked architecture will perform with these BOINC projects. So far compute doesn't seem like Kepler's strong point. Also, a little off topic... But is then any progress being made on the AMD side of things? I haven't heard a single peep about it for over a month. If the developers still don't have a 7970, fine. Please at least confirm as much... Thanks. |

Every BitCoin is worth a certain amount of real money. The more BCs they get, the more they can claim for real money. |
