1) Message boards : News : New 30% faster applications are now used for all runs (Message 17280)

Post:
"Even faster" than which ones? Did you apply the 30% increase (introduced what? 1 month ago?) to all applications or is it a brand new 30% increase?

And, about the "full atoms", wasn't they supposed to be finished and substituted by the 6.72 versione?

I am a bit confused, could you make it clear please? :)

Yup, thanks a lot :)

+1 for GPUGrid ;)

Dear guys, I have been looking for the publications produced with the help of GPUGrid to insert them in a page showing the results of distributed computing efforts.
I've long noticed that the "lack" of "actual" results is one of the elements that most keep people uninterested in BOINC and DC, so I'm trying to solve that in the better possible way: showing the current results, be they publications or whatever else.

For GPUGrid, I've found this page: http://multiscalelab.org/gianni/publications

That doesn't fit the need, because it is a list of ALL publications made by the Multiscale Lab and not ONLY those made possible with the help of BOINC.
Would anyone be so kind to point out which ones are those I'm looking for?
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Error on resuming (more or less everytime) (Message 15613)

Post:
I tested restarting before resuming and it worked.

So I agree with skgiven in thinking that the project looks for RAM blocks that have been overwritten by the game and thus errors out.

I dunno if there could be any programming solution but so far it's only "close BOINC when you play". Pretty lame...

Nope. I can do it, FOR TEST, but that's not really a long time solution: I don't wanna restart everytime I play

Alain, thanks but the problem is not HOW to suspend, the problem is that resuming after suspending leads to a crash in the WU...

I personally think that the "leave application in memory" option was really useful. Why should I uncheck it and why should it solve the problem? Do you think that gaming + GPUGrid saturates the Vram and that is the cause of the errors?

P.S. Closing BOINC is not a viable option. I want to keep computing with the CPU, I just need to free the GPU, that's why I suspend only GPUGrid

Guys, every damn time I suspend the project (to play videogames for example) and then resume it, my WUs error out. This is quite nasty to me. Is it a normal behaviour for the project? Happens with both 6.03 and 6.71.

WindowsXP, BOINC 6.6.38, 8800GT, Driver 191.07
10) Message boards : Number crunching : Toni WUs fail a bit too often (Message 14061)
Posted 26 Dec 2009 by Profile Venturini Dario[VENETO]
Post:
I am looking into the WUs. However, my feeling is that the higher failure number is due to the fact there is a larger number of this kind of WUs.

Another thing to see is whether all of the HERG WUs fail more, or only the D300s. In principle, they should be all very similar (and very similar to the other targets, as well).

For the followup, please see here

The ones failing on my PC are all Toni Herg Wus.

I'm fed up with aborting all Toni WUs on my PC, could you please fix this?

I mean, I have 7 failed WUs in the last 2-3 weeks: 1 Ibuch, 1 Gianni, 5 Toni.

The Ibuch and Gianni ones were completed succesfully by the second user, the Toni sometimes by the fifth.

I have a stock frequencies 8800GT with aftermarket cooler which runs at really low temperatures, WindowsXP, a slightly OCed Athlon64 X2 and enough RAM for everything.

Driver 191.07, BOINC 6.6.38.

I think more people see news than read forums...

Now this explanation makes sense of it all. If getting the results back quickly substantially helps the science, go for it. I think there'd be a lot less uproar if these kind of changes were posted along with the rational. While we like stats we're really here to help advance human knowledge. Thanks for the info.

I totally agree.

I'm not really into this "let's award more to those that compute sooner"...

The idea behind BOINC is completely different. If you want fast computation, go get a supercomputer. If you want to use WASTED cycles, well man, you're going the wrong way.

Post:
I noticed that some WUs (don't ask me which ones...) take longer than usual to complete and they really don't use the full power of my VGA, a 8800GT.

Now, for instance, it's running smooth at 56°. Under "normal full load" - which was the case of most WUs until some days ago - it runs around 61°.

Ubuntu64, BOINC 6.4.5, driver 177.82.

Anyone got the same issue?

I can just point out:

before - 1 hour CPU time per WU
Now - 6 hours

NOT the way to go. I strongly encourage a solution

P.S. On linux

I have a 6.58 WU in queue, so I guess the new version adresses this specific problem. I'll keep you updated about the results.
