Message 7373 - Posted: 12 Mar 2009, 10:06:50 UTC

I finally got my computer to run more than 2 wu's at the same time when I installed 6.6.15 but now it is running 3 and when I log into my account on the website it actually lists my video cards as

[CUDA|GeForce GTX 295|3|896MB]

I am hoping one of the cards is not dead and everything appears OK.

I know that running 2 295's using Vista 64 has caused lots of problems and was hoping someone might have an idea what's wrong

What does BOINC say in the log at start up?

Also I understand that you have to extend the desktop onto each of the cards. Did you do all 4 of them? I don't have dual cards so I am not sure about this bit.

Only under Vista ...

What should be in the logs is 4 instances of GTX 295 (or whatever). At least that is what is in mine...

He's running Vista x64.

Does extending the desktop apply to XP?

What OS are you running Paul? And does it see all 8 cores of your i7?

XP Pro 32-Bit, and it sees all 8 CPU cores, 4 GPU cores on the two GTX295s I have installed. And for XP you do not have to fiddle with the desktop. You just have to make sure that all four cores have a driver installed.

That's never been an issue with all NT-based OS's.

I see that everyone else who is running 295's is doing so on either Linux or XP 32bit and since I have no real need to be running either vista or the 64 bit version other than I have 6 GB Ram installed which I don't need currently so I think the easiest solution would be to install Win XP Pro 32bit when the 3 WU's I am working on now finish.

Thanks for the advice.

You would only have to go into "personalize" - right click desktop - under Vista and extend the desktop to both cards, reinstalling to XP is a bit drastic in liu of that - unless Vista is not your best Sole Mate anyway :)

I tried to extend the desktop and was never able to get it to work for all 4 cards.

I install XP and am now able to use all four GPU's, Thanks for all the advice.

For some they not only had to extend the desktop they had to add monitors to the outputs too ... (or dummy loads) ...

Perhaps this will be changed in later versions of the OS ...

Might be fixed in the later Nvidia drivers. I didn't have to do this for my 295 on xp64.

I know what you mean when you say that some people had to actually attach monitors and not just extend the desktop as that is the situation I found myself in, and was the way I managed to get the 3 card working. I attached the second input for my monitor to the second card and extended the desktop to that, but was never able to get the 4th card to extend onto another monitor even. I decided to just give up and install XP. It was a new install of Vista anyway and I had not installed a bunch of other software and since the machine was designed and purchased with Boinc in mind as I an not a gamer at all, I know that many gamers probably cringe at the thought of having an i7 920 and 2 GTX 295's and a 24 inch monitor and no intention of ever running a game but it is something I never got into, last video game I played was Frogger back in University. To be honest I have to admit I'm a bit embarrassed by the number of hours I spent playing pong when it came on the market, hardly a First Person Shooter equivalent.

Well, this is not to say it it won't work under Vista. It's just that some (or many?) people have problems there, whereas XP32 seems fine, right?

I cannot speak for Vista, but I have had no problems on XP Pro 32-bit ...

XP has never been an issue - its Vista where extending desktops and/or dummy connectors on that type of card that has been needed. Most have found extending the desktop does the trick.
