Hi, I'd been running GPUGRID fine previously but after a reinstall of XP it doesn't seem to detect the CUDA drivers. I've searched around but there doesn't seem to be an obvious answer - i've tried both the 178.28 and 181.20 drivers, both after a fresh install of XP and it gives the same error each time. Any ideas? 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Starting BOINC client version 6.4.5 for windows_intelx86 08/02/2009 12:19:58||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Libraries: libcurl/7.19.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Data directory: F:\BOINC Data 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Running under account Administrator 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3110 @ 3.00GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6] 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 08/02/2009 12:19:58||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Memory: 3.50 GB physical, 5.34 GB virtual 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Disk: 298.09 GB total, 110.05 GB free 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Local time is UTC +0 hours 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Not using a proxy 08/02/2009 12:19:58||No CUDA devices found 08/02/2009 12:19:58||No coprocessors 08/02/2009 12:19:58|ABC@home|URL: http://abcathome.com/; Computer ID: 75509; location: (none); project prefs: default 08/02/2009 12:19:58|climateprediction.net|URL: http://climateprediction.net/; Computer ID: 941477; location: (none); project prefs: default 08/02/2009 12:19:58|GPUGRID|URL: http://www.gpugrid.net/; Computer ID: 22716; location: (none); project prefs: default 08/02/2009 12:19:58||General prefs: from climateprediction.net (last modified 31-Jan-2009 22:00:30) 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Host location: none 08/02/2009 12:19:58||General prefs: using your defaults 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Reading preferences override file 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 3403.30MB 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 3403.30MB 08/02/2009 12:19:58||Preferences limit disk usage to 50.00GB 08/02/2009 12:19:58|climateprediction.net|Restarting task hadam3h_g_18s12_005a_005a_1_1 using hadam3 version 601 08/02/2009 12:19:58|climateprediction.net|Restarting task hadam3h_g_18s08_005a_005a_1_3 using hadam3 version 601 Cheers |

Did you remember to download a Cuda toolkit when rebuilding the software??? Phoneman1 |

You shouldn't need the CUDA toolkit under windows, the driver is doing all this work. I would have guessed it's the protected mode install, but this should only matter under Vista. Just to be sure: did you mean driver versions 178.24 and 181.22? These are known to work, I don't know about the other ones. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Yep, driver versions 178.28 (CUDA 2.0) & 181.20 (CUDA 2.1). I've tried both after a fresh install of XP (to rule out bad driver updates etc). It's running 3DMark without any probs so i'm pretty sure the driver is working OK. I tried reinstalling BOINC without the protected mode on just in case it made any difference, as expected it didn't since i'm running XP. I used NLite to make this version of windows, so I'm wondering if maybe while the install appears to work ok i've removed some component that BOINC needs. Something that allows BOINC to use the video card properly? Just thinking out loud here... |

I'm running BOINC version 6.4.5 and an 8800GTS 512 (currently at stock speeds) btw, so there ought not to be a prob there. |

Having the same problem. GTX 260, 6.5.0 - when BOINC starts up: 2/8/2009 4:02:39 PM||No CUDA devices found EDIT: Problem was RDP (Windows Remote Desktop) - switching to VNC fixed the problem. See my teammate Paul's thread here: http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=603 |

Kaizen, you might want to check the drivers out which I named, as they're known to work. Being able to execute DX code as in 3d Mark does not automatically mean CUDA will work properly. Otherwise.. may well be that the nlite install messed something up. Don't know what that could be, so your best bet would be to test with a regular XP install. Sorry ETA I totally missed the fact you were suggesting different drivers to the ones I tried. The CUDA drivers I've used are 178.28 & 181.20 (the top two listed on http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html). Not sure where to get the ones you've suggested as I can't see them on the CUDA site, unless you mean none-CUDA drivers? I thought only CUDA drivers work with GPUGRID? |

Just hit "download drivers" and off you go ;) Since 178 they're all CUDA enabled, at least the WHQL ones. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Ahh cheers for that, I was convinced CUDA drivers were separate to the standard ones. Bad news is I installed 181.22 and still get the 'No CUDA devices found' error. I'm not entirely convinced the driver installed properly, just because I don't really trust Windows to run anything other than notepad without destroying itself. Are driver cleaners worth using? It does display the correct version number in device manager at least so I might have to accept I need to make another NLite build, which inevitably means sacrificing lots more CDs till I get it right. As you say perhaps I should test with a full version of XP first to make sure i've not gone insane. |

perhaps I should test with a full version of XP first to make sure i've not gone insane. Definitely do that! And on a side note.. do you really gain anything worthwhile by doing this nlite stuff? Isn't XP slim enough for todays hardware? I'm sure it wouldn't be worth the hassle for me. Regarding drivers & cleaners: in the beginning of GPU-Grid we had quite a few driver updates and cleaners were almost never neccessary, just in very rare cases. So I wouldn't count on a bad driver install ;) MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

It depends how much you're into tuning XP in the first place really, and how often you reinstall windows, how many computers you manage etc. With NLite you can splipstream all your drivers, service packs, windows updates, and most commonly used programs and codec packs. You also have full control of how windows behaves once it's installed e.g. half-open connections, what services can run, basically everything you normally have to do once you've installed. Theres an unbelieveable amount of crap bundled with windows that you'll never need, once you've cut it all out it's about 150meg (before you include your own drivers and programs) as opposed to ~600. It makes it a much cleaner, more secure install and does actually run faster in the end, on any hardware, less so on the latest rigs but still noticable. Also since I have a dedicated 'short stroked' windows HD a smaller sized install is capable of running much faster, takes less time to defragment, and doesn't get as fragmented in the first place. This also makes it run more quickly on any PC with a dedicated windows partition. Ok bit of a rant sorry but you did ask! In short I just don't like being patronised by Microsoft. |

Thanks for the explanation! Some of this stuff does sound useful, but I'll stick with my >3 years old install a little longer ;) MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |
