It's NOT your OS that's the problem they moved the Server behind a University firewall and they have rules that GPUGrid is working to get thru, then Steve said they found a database problem they hope to fix soon.

It's been ages since I've had a windows WU, despite the status page saying tasks are ready to send. I have everything ticked on my GPUGrid preferences page, including test applications. Is there any hope of some windows WUs in the future or should I look for another boinc project?

Probably best to set resource to 0% usage as a backup project here. Then crunch for another project that has tasks available consistently. Then if and when your other projects are out of work, your client will fall back here and attempt to get any tasks that might be available at that time.

This project historically over the past several years runs in fits and spurts. So long periods of no work availability and then brief runs of tasks that only lasts a few weeks on average.
