Hello, My machine 585768 is equiped with a 16 Go RAM RTX 3080. On my profile, it looks like GPUGrid only "sees" 4 Go. Does someone know the source of this problem and if this might explain the low speed for WU's completion. Thank You |

reporting only 4GB of VRAM is a BOINC problem, not a problem with your laptop. BOINC uses an old VRAM detection mechanism that is only able to translate the nvidia VRAM amount using a 32-bit value, this maxes out at 4GB and anything above that is not reported. this is a very common issue with BOINC. Myself and several others on our team are using a custom/proprietary version of BOINC that has fixed this issue and properly reports VRAM. We have conveyed the fix to the developers several times, but it seems they are not interested in fixing it. this will have no impact on your run times, as the science application can properly see all of the GPU's capabilities, and GPUGRID tasks are not very memory dependent anyway. what you should check is how many PCIe lanes are connecting your GPU to the CPU (can see this in GPUz), as well as checking how many cores your 3080 actually has (laptop GPUs tend to not be spec'd the same as desktop counterparts), as well as monitoring the thermals and clock speeds of the GPU while running. if it's thermal throttling, or running very low clock speeds, that may be another reason for slower task times. Honestly since this is a laptop, I suspect that all of these factors are at play. Laptop 3080 spec'd lower with less CUDA cores, lower power TDP because it's a laptop, and thermal throttling bringing clock speeds down. GPUGRID is a very heavy workload and tends to max out available power limits and generates a lot of heat. personally I do not think a laptop is suitable for this kind of load.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. Usually I don't use a laptop's GPU , but an RTX 3080 needs to work for science :) I checked the load and temperature, and they look fine. Up to 98 % load, temp 75°C, ... CPU is an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX 8c/16t, HT ON RAM 32 Go @ 3200 Ghz On Collatz and Primegrid, 3x faster than my old GTX 1080 I thought the performance on GPUGRID would be approx the same as an RTX 2080, but I was wrong. Thank You again. Best Philippe |

Can you list the exact model of your laptop?

ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 15 G533QS-HF009T That makes sense then. it's running a really low TDP and not a full spec'd 3080. This is common for Laptop GPUs. they call is a "3080" but it's not really. it's closer to a 3070Ti that's heavily power limited. you're mostly limited to 115W (130W dynamic boost, but I wouldnt expect that for a sustained load like GPUGRID). https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/asus-rtx-3080-mobile-16-gb.b8516 https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-3070-ti.c3675 so your run times are normal I think.
