In the project's preferences page.

It was 100 and just out of curiosity set it to 1000.

Is this a sign of things to come or will this have any effect?

That is a standard boinc setting, it is used for the graphics or screensaver to limit these when active, eg ability to reduce amount of cpu they steal away when running.
