Message 43852 - Posted: 2 Jul 2016, 5:29:48 UTC

Hello all,

Good news!

I should be getting a computer tower that I ordered last week today (finally). It's been a long wait, but I'm so happy today is the day.

Anyways, here is the PC:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/291795184443?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I will be putting my gtx 650ti boost in it once I receive it within the next 12 hours as well as my psu.

The Question is: will my cpu bottleneck the gtx 970 a lot to the point to where it's not even worth buying?

I do not have the 970 yet but that's my next goal, to get that.

Thanks all

That CPU will be fine for a GTX970 especially if you use the variable swan_sync to give the GPU a full core.

Will work if motherboard support Maxwell, could not find any info for your board. If not detected you might need to update bios.

Cpu will work fine for GPUGrid, as Betting Slip say it will be good with swan_sync on.

Thanks all!

Pardon me asking but what is swan_sync? How do I use it? Can I on this gpu? (gtx 650ti boost)

I am concerned you may not get a GTX970 to fit in that case looking at the layout on Ebay.

System variable "swan_sync" will not make any significant difference on a 650ti

A simpler way is to just reserve a CPU core for the GPU. You can do that via BOINC Manager, setting the percentage of processor used so that one core is always left free. Your CPU has dual cores hyperthreaded, or 4 virtual cores. So you can set the processors used at 75% and it should leave you one core free. (Note that this is not the same as the amount of CPU time used, which should normally remain at 100%.)

You can also use an app_config.xml file to reserve a core, but that is slightly more involved. They both achieve essentially the same results as SWAN_SYNC.

Okay, I have reserved one cpu core, thanks.

How about this?

I had to remove the dvd drive and my current one now fits. Will the 970 be bigger than my current one?

A GTX970 is about 10 and a 1/2 inches long. Have you got that space?

No, I do not have that space sadly.

Should I buy a mini gtx 970, or get a pci extender?

A mini GTX970 will be slightly slower (3%) but also use less power and less heat. Don't overclock as they have little headroom. Buy secondhand to get a deal.

Used, maybe from the likes of Ebay. I don't know which country you are from but UK prices are still quite high even if you can obtain a new one.

Ah, I see.

In america where I'm from, used gpu's of that, the prices are around the same for a new, larger gtx 970. Seems a bit crazy to me.

Well, I'm kinda stuck at what to do at this point when it comes to gpu. All of the high-end ones seem to be bigger than my case can handle....

I'd at least like to get the projects done in less than a day. Right now mine takes 1 day and 5 hours, and I still have over 20 hours to go...

If that is the limit for your budget I would get one because it will do more than finish a WU in 24hrs it should finish most within 12hrs

I'd wait a short time until they release the new app and get a 1070 or 1060.
