Hello everyone!

I just have a question that's probably easy for you all to answer but not me... I have an nvidia 8600 gts I just bought for low-key gaming and wanted to use it on here too, however I notice that it is too weak for this program.

I just happened to buy a "Galaxy NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 192-Bit 768 MB GDDR5 SDRAM PCI Express x16" on ebay yesterday to up my rig a bit. I know it's old but it's really all I need and can afford for now.

Basically my question is: does the gtx 460 work with this program? I plan on getting a newer card later next year. I just hope this works for you all. Thanks in advance! :)

I used a GTX 460 for GPUgrid for several years.

It worked, but just barely. Keeping it running 24/7 was not enough to finish a single work unit in a day. The work units aren't getting any shorter.

If you're in a really tough financial spot, you would be forgiven for not operating your card 24/7. It uses plenty of power, and forgoing using it will help accelerate your savings for a more modern, energy efficient card.

Thankfully, a friend of mine offered to mail me a gtx 600 series card and I accepted it. Should be here within a week or two.

My question is: should I hang in there and use the gtx 460? I am about halfway through a project (would've been done by now if i hadn't kept pausing it)

Using it for a bit won't kill me. Also, I have a question about my power supply

I have a feeling 600 watts is too low for my whole system being at full throttle. The card alone requires over 400 watts

Should I get a corsair cx750m later down the road? Right now mine is corsair cx600m

What type of 600 series card are you getting? I can tell you none of then burn more than 400 watts.

The gtx 690 burns 300 watts maximum.
The gtx 680 burns 195 watts maximum.
The gtx 670 burns 175 watts maximum.
And it goes down from there, for the lower number model numbers.

And these are maximum watts, they typical burn less. So, 600 watts power supply should be okay, for 1 card, unless you have something else on your computer that draws a lot of power.

Oh, alright, thanks. I'm not sure what card I'm going to get yet, though, all I know is it's in the 600's.

600 Watts should be fine. I used to run two GTX 680s on a 750 Watt power supply.

It varies by task type. Here's a look at my recent tasks. That should give you an idea of what is currently out there.

Huh, sorry about that. Maybe the admins have restricted access to that page to the account owner?

Anyway, recent tasks have ranged between 128,200 and 268,950 credits. It all depends on how hard they work your graphics card. And those are for Long Tasks. There haven't been any Short tasks for a while, but your 460 should be able to better handle those once we get more of them.

Alright thank you. When I wake up tomorrow morning the project should be finally finished, and I'll see how much credits I get I guess. I know it's not all about the credits but I like watching it add up for fun and it motivates me.

Sorry to bump this again but my results came back as "Error while computing"

And my project says that it's suspended and communication deferred. How can I fix this?

A couple of things that have caused errors for me.
1. The card runs too hot. Use a program like GPU-Z to see the gpu temperature. If you want long life, it is best to keep the gpu in the 60-70C range, as the heat will deteriorate the components around it.
2. On some cards, if you use the 3D section (like playing a game) while it is computing, will cause errors.
3. Sometimes the factory clocking works well for games, but if it is a lot higher than the reference clock rates (those numbers you can get on the Geforce webpage), it will cause errors in computing that you will never see in the game.

As to the suspend question, in the BOINC advanced view, which I assume you already have set, go to the Task tab, right click on the task and the option will be resume. Also check if the project is suspended, by clicking on the project tab to see if the project is suspended.

I looked at your page for your computers, and I see two of them that only differ by the version of BOINC. Do you really have two or did you reinstall BOINC and why replace it with an older version?

Oh I've reinstalled bionic a few times. I just thought about it and now that you mention it, I did over clock. Could this have caused it?

GPUGrid tends to work the cards pretty hard and as such is sensitive to overclocking. It's usually best to not overclock it.

And yes, reinstalling BOINC can cause duplicate machines to appear on your profile. To fix this, just go to the "View Computers on this Account" page within your profile settings and then click on "Merge Computers by Name."

Since you are getting a 600 series card, I can tell you some of my experience. The 660ti I have runs through a work unit in about 14 hours, generating 180k-192k credits each tine. Without paying attention to the fan speed, it runs HOT, like 79C. Because of this and because GPUGRID loads the card close to 100%, the card downclocks and becomes slower. I had to set the fan on manual to keep the temps in the 60's and set the power control to 105%.

I use GPU-Z for monitoring temps and nvidia inspector for changing clocks and power throttling.

As I found if you error out you get 0 credits, but if you run the card at its reliable clock rate, you get plenty of credits which seems to be better all around. In addition the researchers prefer to get the results back as soon as possible, so completing with an error after 14 hours is not good as the same workunit then has to be send out to another computer. I suggest that you set the daily cache to a fractional day like 0.2 and 0 for additional. That way you don't have a unit sitting in your cache that has to wait as much as 14 hours to get even started on. There is an additional 30k or more credits awarded if you return the workunit within 24 hours.

Thank you very much. I've changed my settings to what you said, and as everyone else said, I reset my card's clocked settings back to normal. Things seem ok right now, will get back in a bit to tell results.

STATUS UPDATE:

Okay, my computer has gotten to the point to where it would restart every 5 minutes. Obviously my fault for screwing around with my GPU too much. I've re-installed windows and now am having no issues. Will get back for one last update in a day or two then I'll let the thread die off.
