By my estimations someone could get the fist badge (Glycine) in about 50 days on an 8 thread CPU, so while it's more difficult it's not beyond people as is. That said, the badges were designed for a GPU project and the CPU based research (a Docking project) is different from the GPU research. I would expect that any publications arising from the CPU research would be acknowledged, but I don't know how long the CPU project will run. If a dual core CPU with HT could get a badge in 100days or so, then the situation isn't too bad. I don't know if it's worth the effort to design a new badge system for CPU work.
