Sorry for not responding for a long time. In the mean time I have done no further work / thinking regarding this topic.. but today stumbled upon this Matlab toolbox for thermal simulations. At first glance it seems capable of simulating the designs discussed here. There's a trial version and a 6 months students version for anyone to try, given access to Matlab.
