I'm a little strange that the official website has never published the results or not declared the results are accessible to anyone for further processing. Neither the fore they have no science section where informed at least partial results and status of research ... on page akurat little lax a statement that they "merely scientific and scholarly objectives", but without links to results like this case too weird. A flicking through personal articles of individual members of science team and read their publications, whether by chance there is something, it seems to me quite tedious. |

I'm a little strange that the official website has never published the results or not declared the results are accessible to anyone for further processing. See the "Publications" sections under the different Science subpages: Cancer HIV/AIDS Neural Disorders Methods Neither the fore they have no science section where informed at least partial results and status of research ... on page akurat little lax a statement that they "merely scientific and scholarly objectives", but without links to results like this case too weird. If you click on my profile, you can see my badges on the right, and links to the scientific papers published with my contribution: 2nd/4410 Buch et al, PNAS 2011 1384th/2450 Giorgino et al, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2011 16th/9662 Buch et al, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2011 1st/3113 Giorgino et al, J. Chem. Theory Comput, 2012 6th/5798 Sadiq et al, PNAS 2012There are some new publications underway, so I hope that we'll have new badges and publications this year also. This is not an easy thing to publish in those scientific papers, and they available for their subscribers only, as the publications in their papers are protected by their copyrights. A flicking through personal articles of individual members of science team and read their publications, whether by chance there is something, it seems to me quite tedious. I hope that I've convinced you about the seriousness of this project. |

You can read most of our publications for free (the ones saying pdf) from our group webpage here: http://multiscalelab.org/gianni/publications?action=show&redirect=Publications And yes currently we have multiple papers nearly out :) I actually don't know why we don't link them on the GPUGRID page. |

I actually don't know why we don't link them on the GPUGRID page. I'll do it when we get the next round of publications out and I revise the website, which should be soon. |

Thanks Nate for committing to making the publications (and links) more visible. It's very important for users to be able to easily see that information. I believe it deserves its own section within the "Science" page -- a section called "Publications". - Jacob |

Within the Science section, each of the previous/present research areas (Cancer, HIV, Neural disorders, Methodologies) has a Publications section. However, while this lists the full paper names, there are no links. While you should obviously expand the research areas, you should also fill out what you have already done. To cater for the full variety of cruncher (researcher, IT Pro, enthusiast, layperson) these sections should be augmented with links to papers, and more importantly your cruncher friendly result interpretations. As well as the existing molecular videos, seminar videos and presentations could be added, as could some background references and links. While you may not like to discuss what you are presently working on, to the people doing the crunching this is most important! While I enjoy discussions on crunching apps and hardware I would prefer to discuss the science. FAQ's HOW TO: - Opt out of Beta Tests - Ask for Help |

Recently I have also asked my self why am I crunching in GPUGRID and to what am I contributing exactly? It was quite hard to answer those question looking at your site. You have descriptions and some publications but the descriptions are vague and the publications look outdated. I would really recommend to check the World Community Grid website for clues. They have quiet detailed explanation of the projects and regular updates of the project's progress. Also please include a section on what are you doing with the generated data. I would like the generated data to be freely available to other projects and researchers as well. |

Yes, it's still a bit too difficult to discern the active research being performed at GPUGrid. Completed work is however largely available in the form of research write ups, publication drafts and videos. GPUGrid is a small research team. The numbers are mostly made up of PhD students, who really should add some material to their multiscalelab profiles! By contrast, WCG has full time IT staff, large financial support from IBM, 460 partners to date, and facilitates several research groups. Just yesterday WCG hoisted their long needed site overhaul - and yes, it's much better now. Note it was the IT staff who improved the web site, not the researchers. GPUGrid largely uses a Boinc web template. IMO it's this template that needs an overhaul and it really does need to be more Science orientated, and from the point of view of the cruncher. The template does not facilitate the flow of research and development to publication and is not very modularized, so components cant easily be included/removed and added as needed. Unfortunately this leaves all the research projects to do this for themselves, and inherently leads to dissimilarity between projects (a gripe for some). Scientists have to spend far too much time developing and maintaining their sites. This is on top of learning how to use Boinc (everything you see, the apps, research, a server, site and maintenance). WCG on the other hand don't use a Boinc template. It's origins stem form a non-Boinc project. The researchers can rely on the WCG IT team to facilitate most of the above and help with development and troubleshooting. Some minor work has recently been performed on the GPUGrid site but the last major overhaul was around 20months ago and largely by different researchers. I believe some plans exist to make GPUGrid site improvements, but developing the app and performing research tends to take priority. Perhaps some of the WCG changes will make their way into the Boinc template? FAQ's HOW TO: - Opt out of Beta Tests - Ask for Help |

Perhaps some of the WCG changes will make their way into the Boinc template? If not today then perhaps tomorrow. I don't keep track of grants and funding but sources I consider reliable claim funding for BOINC@Berkeley and SETI@home is drying up. If that's true then SETI will one day be history (oh happy, happy day and good riddance) and BOINC development at Berkeley will cease to be. At that point BOINC code would be up for grabs if I'm not mistaken and control of it would pass to whomever can take and maintain control, open-source-concept, GPL, Stallmann and all that not withstanding. Seems to me nobody is in better position to take control or at least play a dominant role than IBM. BOINC <<--- credit whores, pedants, alien hunters |

Hey Dagorath, I understand your concern. It is true that the webpage is not updated nearly at all and could be much better. The problem is that this last year has been a transitioning year, lets say, as the scientific staff in the group changed totally. Therefore we had to prioritize research and publications as new people joined the group and had to find and start new projects from scratch. The way it looks now is that we probably need to have a meeting by the end of the year to discuss and work a bit on the public side. But as skgiven said we are a small group of scientists which mostly have no idea on web design so it's always a bit of work to change things. So although I hope we update it soon I doubt we will ever have frequent updates. On the data side, I mentioned somewhere else that there are plans already on sharing the simulation data. AFAIK we already share it if another group asks for it. The challenge is that right now we are using 200 Terrabytes of disk. So sharing this amount of data will be a bit tricky. |

It's scientific etiquette to share data/results/findings/theories with associate research groups. Many Journals require and sometimes even facilitate such commitment. In some research environments data can be used by many different groups and in different research areas. However, molecular dynamics is a very focused type of research and the data wouldn't normally be of use for anything else. FAQ's HOW TO: - Opt out of Beta Tests - Ask for Help |

Hey Dagorath, I don't have a concern about the publications though I can see how my OT post might have led you to thinking I am concerned. For that I apologise. Keep up the good work :) BOINC <<--- credit whores, pedants, alien hunters |
