I've been looking at purchasing a GTX 660 ti to crunch here. Currently, prices are around $299.

Should I buy now? Do you think that prices will drop when the 760 ti is released?

The reason I ask, is because of this article:

I realize the article is old and may be false in general, but it made me wonder if there would be a price drop soon.

I could afford to buy a 660 ti at it's current pricing, however I don't want to waste money where I could have saved it.

From what I have seen, the 600 series has already experienced a price drop, the question now becomes how much lower do you think the price will further go down before they run out of inventory and do not replace stock? When that happens you may have trouble finding the model you wanted to purchase.

Generally, when I see rebates and/or video games being offered, retailers (such as Newegg) and the manufacturers (in this example, NVIDIA) want to clear out remaining inventory to make room for new models being released or soon to be released.

You could wait and see what happens, but what you want may not be available. Otherwise, this is never a easy decision when you look at the various factors.

From what I have read the 660 Ti is a good video card. Good luck with your decision and hopefully your purchase.

Look at what happened with GTX680 and GTX770: the new card is slightly faster and a bit cheaper (400$), which is nice.. but the GTX680 stays at 450$ officially. So it wil be up to the shops to get rid of them by some discounts.

For the GTX660Ti it's different in the way that the card is not as overpriced as the GTX680 was, so there's even less competitive pressure to reduce prices. Chances are, however, that we'll get a faster GTX760Ti (essentially the current GTX670) at the same price point.

You might also want to consider the GTX660, as it currently seems to be the sweet spot for GPU-Grid (a bit slower, a lot cheaper).

I looked at the GTX 660, and it seems like a good option. I had never really thought about if before in terms of using it for GPUGRID.

Now another question rises: Should I buy the GTX 660 or the GTX 760, when it comes out?

Assuming the GTX 760 is simply a rebranded GTX 660 ti, then, to me, it would make more sense to buy the 660's now, as the performance difference will be minimal. Also, if I buy the 660's soon, I can grab some of the 'Metro: Last Light' coupons that they offer in a promotion.


Furthermore, any brand recommendation? I was looking at EVGA because I have $35 worth of 'EVGA bucks'. However, EVGA bucks can only be used on EVGA's website, and not on Amazon, where I some of the money spent would go to GPUGRID researchers.

Please note: I am not looking for a card to play games on, just to crunch GPUGRID work.

If you only crunch on the one system, then you have limited resources, and should wait for the GTX760Ti, possibly a re-branded GTX670, or 760. If you have 2 or 3 systems and two or three spare PCIE slots then the present GTX660 would be the choicest card, as you could always add another later.
If you don't mind the hassle of buying and selling then you could get a 660 now and replace it in 3 or 6 months.

Since we don't know exactly how the rest of the 700 cards will look like it's tough to make recommendations. But as I said before: there's not much need for nVidia to put pressure on the mainstream market, so I don't expect them to do so.

Hence 2 x GTX660 looks like a good idea. And that Asus surely has a nice cooler. Make sure the case cooling (if there's a case ;) can handle the heat. Otherwise.. that EVGA coupon might be nice, if you don't end up paying more over their homepage even with coupon.

not a big fan of evga anymore, the cooling systems are lacking compared to non-reference designs. that reference blower-style fan gets really noisy and subpar cooling performance.

What's a little noise compared to a 3 to 5 year transferable warranty? All I had to do was register the cards at the website, I remember back in the early to mid 90's when water cooling was science fiction and all the rage were these little 60mm Delta screamers (you could make a hoover craft out of you're cat with 4 of them). Throw a couple of dip switches and you could check you're email at warp speed.

Ouh ^^ Had some 8 and 12cm deltas running AT HOME in some servers :D I heard them through the full flat for years even they was in a closed 19" rack ^^
