So... I pulled the GTX 460 completely out of the system, and removed the gpu_exclusions from the cc_config.xml file.

... I restarted BOINC, allowed GPUGrid (with app_config) to get a task, it got assigned to instance 0 slot 0, and it completed immediately, exhibiting the behavior.

Thus, I conclude that whatever is happening is not related to having 2 GPUs in the system.

Still pushing onward...

Alright, so, with the GTX 460 still out of the system, I stopped using my Account Manager (BOINCstats BAM!), so I could remove the GPUGrid.net project. Then I restarted BOINC. Then I re-added the Account Manager, which re-added the GPUGrid.net project.

So, it initialized, and I did not place an app_config.xml file in the project directory.

And then... using default project app settings (since there was no app_config.xml file), it got a Nathan dhfr36 task, assigned to instance 0 slot 0, and completed immediately, exhibiting the behavior.

Thus, I can now *finally* conclude that:
app_config.xml is COMPLETELY UNRELATED to this issue.

PS: I also ran a test that concludes that, even if the project was added manually (not added from an Account Manager), the issue still occurs.

I've still got a couple more tests to run... pushing forward...

Alright, so my next test was to confirm that it was related to slot 0.

So, I did was I set CPU % to 25%, and then allowed new tasks for WCG. It got 2 CPU tasks, and started them in slots 0 and 2.

Then I allowed new tasks for GPUGrid. It got 1 task, and started it in slot 3, and appeared to be progressing normally (ie: not exhibiting the issue). Log is below.

Note: The reason slot 1 keeps getting skipped is because, for some reason, it never gets cleaned properly. I'm hoping it's unrelated to my issue, but it'll be the next thing I test.

Below you'll find the contents of slot 1, and the log showing how the dhfr36 task progresses normally in slot 3.

Alright, so... I closed and restarted BOINC a couple times, so it would clean up any slots it could. As I said before, it left a slot in the slots directory, slot 1. So, I closed BOINC, and moved that directory elsewhere, such that the slots directory was now empty.

So, with an empty slots directory...
I restarted BOINC, allowed GPUGrid to get a task, it got a Nathan dhfr36, assigned to instance 0 slot 0, and immediately completed, exhibiting the issue.

Thus I conclude that this issue... is in no way related to... me having a slot directory "1" that wasn't getting cleaned normally.

I'm not done testing stuff yet, pushing onward...

So, to test whether it was some sort of "permissions" issue:

I uninstalled BOINC, reinstalled (using the "allow all users to configure" setting like I usually use), allowed a GPUGrid task, and the issue still occurred.

The next test will be to uninstall, and remove any BOINC-related Windows user accounts and user groups... before reinstalling.

Interesting... very interesting...

I made a backup copy of my data directory (and did not delete nor rename the existing data directory), and then...

I uninstalled BOINC, and removed the 3 BOINC user groups, and removed the 2 BOINC users (which I think existed because, at one point in my alpha testing, I had installed as a service install).

Then, I reinstalled BOINC, using the option to "allow all users to configure BOINC", and it told me I had to restart (since it created new Windows user groups I believe).

So, I restarted, had a hiccup where BOINC wouldn't start normally (I don't know why), uninstalled BOINC, reinstalled BOINC, and it didn't require a restart.

Then I allowed a GPUGrid task, it got a Nathan dhfr36, assigned instance 0 slot 0.... and it progressed normally.

I have absolutely no idea why, before, the tasks would work correctly on slot directories that weren't "0", but then exhibit the issue on slot "0".

But, at this point, this whole issue, now smells like... a permissions issue in my data directory.

I think my next step is going to be to uninstall BOINC, rename the data directory (so BOINC will think one does not exist on install), install BOINC, and begin slowly rebuilding the data directory with my customized settings (like cc_config.xml, global_prefs_override.xml, app_config.xml files, statistics files, etc.)... testing along the way that slot 0 is still behaving correctly.

Side note: For some reason, I now cannot open some of the log files within my BOINC data directory - it says

Well, when I put the GTX 460 back into the system, Windows wouldn't load the drivers properly (complained of too many resources being used), so I had to uninstall some hidden Device Manager entries, then uninstall/reinstall nVidia drivers, then uninstall/reinstall my sound drivers.... Then redo all my nVidia Control Panel settings, and redo my sound driver settings. Blech.

And then... just when I thought the issue was a bad data directory... I uninstall/reinstall BOINC, launch it, it creates a new data directory, I close BOINC, put in my cc_config, restart it, attach to GPUGrid, and... the issue happens again on slot 0 (but the GPU task in slot 1 starts/runs just fine)!

I thought I would be able to come up with a definitive "cause", but I cannot.
On a fresh data directory, without using an app_config.xml file, and without using a cc_config.xml file... The Nathan dhfr36 tasks still sometimes immediately complete on my system in slot 0. Log is below.

I am now very tired, so I'm going to halt testing for now. Perhaps I'll think of another good test (maybe see if I can get it to happen without ever saving a global_prefs_override.xml file)... but I'm seriously just about out of tests.

I wish an admin would step in, to try to recreate this issue. I'm giving my all here.

Sometime tomorrow, I will post a summary of everything I know/found.

Service installations are bad for GPU crunching, and might cause oddities even after uninstalls and re-installations of Boinc. At this stage I would start looking at the operating system as the culprit. Repeatedly updating Boinc due to alpha testing could have caused hidden security issue that have registry entries or left their mark on the operating system in some unknown way. Occasionally operating system and apps find 'deleted' files, recover and use them during installations. Boinc actively looks for previous installations, but I don't know if that is limited to the default folder, or registry... Anyway, It's better to erase the free space and clear the registry. Who knows what the many changes in all the versions of Boinc you used could have done

I had a GPU problem once that I just couldn't figure out; it repeatedly failed one type of GPUGrid WU. Spent weeks reinstalling Boinc, drivers, new accounts... no luck. Popped it in another system and it worked straight away. Formatted the drive in the old system, reinstalled Windows and it worked without issue - Might be best to start with a clean slate.

It sounds like you are suggesting that I perform a clean reinstall of Windows 8. While I agree that it may come to that, I have a duty (as both an alpha tester, as well as a regular user imho) to give it my all to find the nature of the problem, if I can.

So, I will continue testing, including things like manually deleting BOINC directories after uninstalls, and manually removing registry entries after uninstalls, to see if I can get it to work correctly, before the "final test" of reinstalling Windows 8.

After all, if this is a problem with changing from service install to non-service install, or changing from x86 to x64, or changing from x64 to x86, or Windows compatibility settings, or anything else... It'd be better to try to figure out the problem's nature, alert the BOINC devs, and have them actually fix it, than simply to wipe the OS clean and ignore the problem.

If it comes to wiping the OS, I will do it. But that's the final step in finding the solution. I've got some more tests to do first :)

I will only test the issue on Windows 7, if a clean reinstall of Windows 8 does not fix the issue.
If it does eventually come to a clean reinstall of Windows 8, it will hopefully be within this week (ie: you'll have your answer sooner rather than later, hopefully).

So... I
- Uninstalled BOINC
- Ensured the following 2 directories were deleted:

So, for this test... I
- Uninstalled BOINC
- Ensured the following 2 directories were deleted:
* C:\Program Files\BOINC
* C:\ProgramData\BOINC
- (New for this test) Deleted the following 3 Windows Local User Groups:
* boinc_admins
* boinc_projects
* boinc_users
- Restarted the PC
- Installed BOINC
- When prompted to restart Windows, clicked Yes to restart
- BOINC manager/client started
- Attached to GPUGrid.net project
- Changed BOINC settings to the following (which did not require the creation of a global_prefs_override.xml file):
* Activity -> Run always
* Activity -> Use GPU always
* Activity -> Network activity always available
- BOINC got a Nathan dhfr36 task, assigned instance 0 slot 0
- It completed immediately, exhibiting the behavior.

I think I'm going to again pull the GTX 460 out of the system, and redo this test. If I keep that GPU out, then going forward with my upcoming tests (removing registry keys, and possibly reinstalling Windows 8)... I can be 100% sure that having multiple heterogeneous GPUs is not a causal factor.

A few generic concerns/considerations:

Did you upgrade to W8, or do a clean install?
Did you ever have a Boinc 6.10.x version on that system (as it basically didn't work with Win8), including a previous OS (if you upgraded)?
Have you changed the drivers during testing, and if so, did you perform a clean installation?

From the outset it looked like this problem might have been specific to your system. Despite that I have tried to help, as has MrS and a few others chipped it too. Its now seems clear that this problem is specific to your test setup: Many of the tests that you recently ran were already ran by myself, and MrS without replication of the problem. Further, as you have experienced the problem without app_config, and without cc_config, many others would have inevitably experienced the same issue if it was simply related to 7.0.64 or GPUGrid WU's. I get the feeling we have been on a wild goose chase.

My biggest concern is still for this project. Failing lots of WU's has a massive impact, as all work units are used to build subsequent WU's. In effect you have been systematically destroying Nate's research. I'm a little surprised you haven't been asked to cease and desist. You are also getting lots of credit for doing it, which others won't like. We know you are a Boinc tester, otherwise your account would have already been suspended, but it doesn't give you the inherent right to test to the point of destruction on a live project that is actively performing scientific research. I'm pleased that you tried to uninstalled Boinc, deleted the directories and test with standard settings. However, the results are bad concerning the issue is specific to you, and further suggest it's OS related. So I ask you again to consider performing a clean Windows installation. Just being able to narrow the issue down to some oddity with using and upgrading various Boinc test installations is still useful. Using deprecated versions of Boinc have caused hidden problems for this project in the past. Upgrades from test versions might still have hidden legacies of the deprecated versions, deep in the OS reg for example. I really don't think there is any point in trying to test on an upgraded client from numerous deprecated client versions; these are for testers only. It would however make sense to test on an upgrade from 7.0.26 to 7.0.64 but in my opinion, only after a clean OS install.

My Windows 8 installation was a clean install of Windows 8 x64 RTM, around 10/26/2012. While it started with BOINC v7 versions, I am positive at one point that I uninstalled BOINC, and installed a BOINC v6 version (possibly also a WCG BOINC v6 version) as part of my BOINC alpha upgrade testing. Regarding drivers, I assume you mean nVidia drivers. And yes, I've upgraded those drivers many times. Sometimes I have uninstalled/restarted/installed the drivers, but most of the times I just run the installer which upgrades the drivers. In every case, though, I make sure to choose "Clean install" in the nVidia driver installation, since I often run the beta nVidia drivers, and know that they leave things behind.

First of all, thank you for your help testing. While I agree that you guys have done many of the tests, I don't think either of you have the exact same 2 GPUs in your system. Because of this, we have different hardware, which shouldn't make a difference, but could. I know it feels like we have been going on a wild goose chase, believe me, I'm on the front line! That's why I'm trying to give everyone as much relevant information as possible, without jumping to guesswork or assumptions! Hopefully the chase will conclude soon, but if you can think of tests that you could perform based on my observations, I wouldn't stop trying to reproduce the issue if I were you guys.

While I do feel bad that I'm completing tasks that obviously have problems, there's not much I can do. GPUGrid doesn't have a public test environment, so I cannot try to recreate the issue there. And, I wouldn't have been able to figure out everything we know about this issue, if it wasn't for the systematic step-by-step approach that I took in re-testing the issue each step of the way. The admins know that I'm working on this, but if they wanted me to "stop my behavior", what would they ask me? "You, sir, are no-longer allowed to use GPUGrid until you reinstall your OS." That would be ludicrous.

If this issue is real, which it is, then the admins should do 2 things. The same 2 things I mentioned before:
1) Fix the application so that it doesn't complete successfully and immediately.
2) Fix the validator so it performs additional validation before giving credit.

The admins have a way to identify the problem-tasks that I've completed, so, I'm not "destroying" research, as they can manually invalidate those tasks. I'd request that they take away all of the credit I earned for those tasks, too, but I'm not sure how easy that would be for them.

Keep in mind, skgiven... I'm trying to isolate the cause of a problem here, the only way I know how. Systematic step-by-step testing and issue reproduction. Finding the cause, which may no longer have value to you, is still very valuable to me. It may soon come to a reinstall of Windows 8, which does not make me happy, but is on the list of future tests.

So, for this test... I wanted to test using only WHQL nVidia drivers installed from file, with no nVidia software on the system, and only with the GTX 660 Ti in the system.

So I:
- Made sure the GTX 460 was removed
- Uninstalled BOINC
- Ensured the following 2 directories were deleted:
* C:\Program Files\BOINC
* C:\ProgramData\BOINC
- Deleted the following 3 Windows Local User Groups:
* boinc_admins
* boinc_projects
* boinc_users
- Uninstalled everything nVidia from Programs and Features (including all the 320.00 beta software pieces)
- Restarted the PC
- Windows auto-re-installed nVidia drivers (314.22 WHQL), but I didn't trust them. My goal was to start with NO nVidia drivers on the system.
- Restarted the PC
- Installed 314.22 WHQL, from my downloaded installation file
- Restarted the PC
- Uninstalled 314.22
- Restarted the PC
- Windows auto-re-installed nVidia drivers (314.21 beta)
- Restarted the PC
- Disabled the network adapter (so Windows Update wouldn't get drivers)
- Since no nVidia entries were in Programs and Features, I used Device Manager to right-click-uninstall on the GTX 660 Ti, also checking the box to uninstall the software
- Restarted the PC
- Verified Device Manager now showed something like "Basic Video adapter", and no nVidia software existed in Programs and Features
- Installed 314.22 WHQL, from my downloaded installation file, again
- Restarted the PC
- Enabled the network adapter
- Verified Windows Update had no driver updates for me
- Ran CCleaner to clean up temporary file directories, and also I manually cleaned them too.
- Installed BOINC
- When prompted to restart Windows, clicked Yes to restart
- BOINC manager/client started
- Attached to GPUGrid.net project
- Changed BOINC settings to the following (which did not require the creation of a global_prefs_override.xml file):
* Activity -> Run always
* Activity -> Use GPU always
* Activity -> Network activity always available
- BOINC got a Nathan dhfr36 task, assigned instance 0 slot 0
- It completed immediately, exhibiting the behavior.

So, this further concludes that the issue is not related to multiple GPUs, nor multiple nVidia driver installs (since I installed 314.22 from scratch), nor beta nVidia drivers (since 314.22 exhibits the behavior).

But I noticed something (see below) that I want to test, and so I've still got a couple more tests before reinstalling Windows 8.
1) Test a clean BOINC installation that includes registry cleaning (where I also use CCleaner to clean the registry, and also manually search for BOINC registry keys, deleting them when I find them)
2) I noticed that, in Device Manager, I have a display adapter called "LogMeIn Mirror Driver". This is from my installation of LogMeIn v4.1.2600 from 12/14/2012. I consider this a possibility for conflict, and so, another test will involve uninstalling/deleting everything BOINC, uninstalling everything LogMeIn, and restarting, before cleanly installing BOINC.

I hope one of those 2 tests solves it. I really don't want to reinstall Windows 8 :)
