I have SETI and GPUGrid for projects. When selecting the "computing preferences" in each project, yields two different titles under the "Network usage" section. SETI reports as:

"Maintain enough tasks to keep busy for at least
(max 10 days)."

while GPUGrid reports:

"Computer is connected to the Internet about every
Leave blank or 0 if always connected. "

both will affect the same parameter but, obviously, they do not mean the same thing. I am having trouble configuring my client for GPUGrid GPU usage (posted in another thread) and debugging it becomes obscure when the 2 projects I am involved give different meanings to the same parameter.

Must be down to different server versions. There are probably updates that could be applied, but updating the server means downtime and a lot of non-research work.

some other BOINC users had told me that the wording used in GPUGrid is for BOINC 6.x versions while the wording used by SETI is the corresponding to 7.x versions. Does this mean that an user who wishes to configure BOINC 7.x and up is really configuring for 6.x? (They do mean different things)

When you set Computing Preferences on a site they apply to all BOINC projects in which you participate. Computing Preferences are not project specific. The most recently modified preferences are applied (to your Boinc client).
Local preferences, applied from Boinc Manager, take precedence (override web settings).

Few projects use the most up to date server version. Most projects chose to apply patches, as needed, and only upgrade if they have to. It's a lot of work for small research teams to do, especially when it interferers with the research. It's also worth noting that the web site had a major overhaul about a year ago. It's very bespoke compared to the generic Boinc template site. I don't see any need for incorporating every update. It's risky and time consuming. If it's not broken...
BTW Just because the web pages haven't been updated with the latest jargon doesn't mean the back end hasn't been updated. My understanding is that some code is 7.x

I cannot tell you exactly what I88R3-NATHAN_dhfr36_1-1-6-RND8663 does, but basically the scientists do simulations of many different things and then can eventually write a paper on their total findings, or what they discovered from these many batches of workunits. Hope this helped.

Sorry, I can't help you there. There isn't a way to tell by looking at the workunit name, I don't think. However, if you follow up on what posts under the news forum, you can get a pretty good idea of what each job is doing.

Usually when a researcher posts about a new batch of workunits, they would say what the workunits are for. However, if they don't I'm sure they don't take offense to someone simply asking what the tasks are related to.

I looked around for a thread where someone asked what topic the workunits were related to, because I remembered seeing a thread like that, but I couldn't find it.

It could be that a given task is working on something fundamental to many different diseases not just AIDs/HIV, cancer, or whatever.
