The results from one set of WU are used to make the next set. To try and get them back quickly the project gives the bonus. As far as I understand Milkyway works in a similar way to GPUgrid but they (Milkyway) don't use a bonus system. Most projects have a set of data that needs to be crunched regardless of the result.
