I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 GPU. Why am I getting that message?

Need to install BOINC as regular application NOT protected mode (service). Need to have a proper nvidia driver installed. Cannot access via remote desktop. Did you meet these requirements?

BOINC was installed like any other program. I don't know anything about protected mode. The driver is up to date. I am not remotely accessing the account.

I have been doing GPUGRID for several years. The problem started a few months back. I had not made any changes to my system prior to the problem.

Are you sure the GPU is still in the PC?
Just kidding, during a BOINC installation (or update) you select default or advanced settings. If you choose advanced you can set the installation paths and there's a checkbox for "protected mode", which is enabled by default. Make sure it's unchecked.

I always use the default settings. I just downloaded the new version of BOINC Manager. I will see if that helps.

This happens to me on my Linux OS occasionally. It is almost always solved by updating my system to its most up to date state. Then restarting.

Been searching for hours to find out why GPUGRID wouldn't get new tasks. A simple 'BOINC is set to run in protected mode' message would have saved me a lot of time!

FYI

After today's update of three Ubuntu-12.04-LTS-PCs two of them can't find the GPU (GTX 570, 680) any more. Displays also are not detected correctly any more. Several reboots don't work. Updating NVIDIA driver doesn't work.

Because of being dull with Linux-systems, I will wait for further updates of Ubuntu in the hope it's a bug that gets killed in the near future.

Problems fixed:

- Reading through this forums, I learned to have to insert "sleep 5" command into /etc/init.d/boinc-client according to http://www.gpugrid.org/forum_thread.php?id=3083 and to http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=266.

- Display of one PC was not detected because the update of Ubuntu has somehow deinstalled the NVIDIA driver.
