Hello everyone!

To bring some light into the jungle of chip code names, computing capabilities and shaders I created the following overview.

Cards that are red will not run the new applications that are compiled using the Cuda 2.0 SDK.
Cards in grey are able to run these applications, but are simply to slow and hence not recommended by the project. (main page says 50, somewhere it was stated that cards with 96 stream processors are recommended)
Green cards will run the current applications without problems, if there is any it should be a software bug...

Computing capability 1.0

G80:

    *Geforce 8800 GTS - 320/640M - 96 shader units
    *GeForce 8800 GTX - 768M - 128 shader units
    *GeForce 8800 Ultra - 768M - 128 shader units

Computing capability 1.1

G84

    *GeForce 8600 GT - 256/512M - 32 shader units
    *GeForce 8600 GTS - 256/512M - 32 shader units

G86

    *GeForce 8400 GS - 128/256M - 16 shader units
    *GeForce 8500 GT - 256/512M - 16 shader units

G92

    *GeForce 8800 GS - 384M - 96 shader units
    *GeForce 8800 GT - 256/512/1024M - 112 shader units
    *GeForce 8800 GTS - 512/1024M - 128 shader units
    *GeForce 9600 GSO - 384/768M - 96 shader units
    *GeForce 9800 GT - 512M - 112 shader units
    *GeForce 9800 GTX - 512M - 128 shader units
    *GeForce 9800 GTX+ - 512M - 128 shader units
    *GeForce 9800 GX2 - 2x512M - 128 shader units

G94

    *Geforce 9600 GT - 512/1024M - 64 shader units

G96

    *Geforce 9500 GT - 256M - 32 shader units

Computing capability 2.0

D10U-20

    *GeForce GTX 260 - 896M - 192 shader units

D10U-30

    *GeForce GTX 280 - 1024M - 240 shader units

Good idea!

I think you can put the 9600GT on the green list as well. It's got its shaders clocked fairly high and should be able to finish a WU within 24h with the current client.

Thanks for you work koschi!
Made this thread a sticky, so people who are not sure if their card can contribute will hopefully read this before they ask... ;)

Hi Koshi,
great job!
Please repost this message on the FAQ forum, highlighting that 1.0 will not work and add a disclaimer to the best of your knowledge. I will link it from the home page instead of the current link to Nvidia.

many thanks, very useful.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Unfortunately I can't edit my post any longer, but I will take your input and rework my post for the FAQ forums then, including the 9600GT...

I think that Geforce G200 series has computing capability 1.3 not 2.0. Can you check?

You are right, the GT200 Series has computing capability 1.3

http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/2.0-Beta2/docs/Programming_Guide_2.0beta2.pdf

I was assuming that Cuda version = computing capability level, which is wrong.

Will take that into account for the FAQ. But still I can't edit the post, was that limited in time?

Not bad, I also need 16 hours with my 9800GT, but under Linux... :-/
I'm going to post the FAQ entry soon.

Edit:

Done, hopefully I didn't mess up the second part, otherwise please correct me.

OK - as a newbie - and I'm sure this is probably explained elsewhere, but why won't my 8800GTX run the application?

Apologies if you're having to cut and paste a response!!.....

If I understood it right it is because your card only has computing capability 1 which does not support CUDA 2.0 (or CUDA 2.0 does not support cards with computing capability 1).

Oh well....... thanks.

Would anyone like to suggest a good card for this application as I have to acquire one new graphics card and may as well shuffle my existings ones around my PCs....

Choose one of the greenly marked from the opening posts that is sold for the money you are willing to spend.

8800GT/9800GT should give you the best credit/$ or € proportion I guess.

As always, this post is without any guarantee ;-)

Why is it that the 8800GTX isn't supported but other 8800 series cards are?

because it has the "old" G80-chip. G80 do not support the cuda 1.1 computing
