You should not get the message "Device Emulation", but the name of your graphics card. Have you installed the driver correctly from Nvidia CUDA website as indicated in the gpugrid home page? I got also this message. I have a 8400GS and it crashes directly after downlod and start. 26.08.2008 10:58:57||CUDA devices found 26.08.2008 10:58:57||Coprocessor: Device Emulation (CPU) (1) Wolfram |

Geforce 8800 GTS with 640MB is a G80 Chip, same with the 320MB Version. Only the 8800GTS with 512 and 1024MB are G92 Versions that support Cuda 1.1... |

Can someone clarify what makes a card cuda2 compatible please. We all do this as a hobby/passion/obsession and it isn't cheap. I would hate for someone to spend hard earned cash on a card that is immediately made obsolete by the introduction of cuda2. Some 8800GT's are cuda2 compatible, some are not. Is it just the amount of memory? The previous post mentions G80 & G92 architectures, is it that? If so, are all G92s ok? Something along the lines of "if your card supports xyz you're ok for cuda2" and an indication of where we can find if our cards support xyz would be good. Your project has certainly gained a lot of interest since you introduced GPU processing but these things cost money so anything that would help future proof users spending would be beneficial to both you and your users. |

You should not get the message "Device Emulation", but the name of your graphics card. Have you installed the driver correctly from Nvidia CUDA website as indicated in the gpugrid home page? certainly. On foldin home, my gpu work without problems. Cuda 1.0 vs cuda 2.0? compatible device? i think that you should make your software compatible with all cuda graphics card. If some operation can't be performed on gpu, then do it on cpu or whatever. It's unbelivable that nvidia creates these differences in its api... |

The problem is simply that our code had two different ways of performing a part of the calculation. For running on old GPUs and on more recent one. However, when compiled with the cuda2.0 toolkit the old GPU code crashes, so we had to default to the simpler code based on more recent GPU devices. This does NOT have to be a problem with the compiler, CUDA or anything. It could well be a problem with the old code. Fact is that we can now only support devices with 1.1 compute capability. We are updating the scheduler to take this into account. Geforce 8800GT 512, all 9000 and GT200 series will work on it for sure. Others might work too (for instance at least some 8600). gdf |

Thanks for the information, GDF. So it seems very unfortunate and frustrating for users, but solving it would require you to put serious effort into finding the bug / cause of the error, with uncertain outcome. And a side note: my first WU with 6.41 and 177.35 completed fine, now I'm running with 177.84. Seems to work but won't be faster. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

So far so good. On WindowsXP with 8800GT-512MB I got ready to install 6.3.10, made a backup, then realized I already had that installed. Told you my brain gets fried after a day of work. So Upgraded NVIDIA drivers to 177.84. Rebooted. After startup, Enabled work and reset project. I got a 6.41 and has been running about 30 minutes. I'll update 2 work computers tomorrow with 6.3.10 and 177.84. They should have finished all current work by then. |

Is anyone else running 6.3.10 and crunching a CPU project as well as a CPU project? Have you encountered any GPU WU errors? I swapped my rather temperamental 8800GT card to a P4 HT 3GHz running 32 bit Vista. Using drivers 177.79 and Ntune to force standard 600/900MHz clocks all seems very stable......until that is the parallel CPU WU for another project reports its' result. At the very second the CPU WU completes and starts upload, the GPU WU crashes with an error: Cuda error: Kernel [frc_sum_kernel_angle] failed in file 'force.cu' in line 487 : unknown error. I've lost two WU on this box as a result of this behaviour, the first was after 13.5 hours crunch time (just 30 minutes from completion, the second after 5 hours. I can't see any signs of instability on the clocks now, so I've suspended the CPU project while the GPU crunches away. Perhaps the P4 HT is not servicing the GPU in a timely manner when it is busy with the other WU from the CPU project? |

Same problem on the 8800GT of my team mate, what can we do to resolve this? |

Try upgradeing to driver 177.84 I've only been running that driver only a few hours, but in previous testing on 3 P4-HT's under heavy use and running 1 each CPU + 1 GPU I've not had errors like that. But then again I do not run VISTA. |

It's a 8800GTS 320 Mo. If you desperately want to do science with your 8800GTS, join Folding @ Home by the Pande Group. Their science is very similar to the GPUGrid project and they do support first generation chips (G80 with compute capability 1.0) |

I also use Vista64 (SP1), BOINC 6.3.10, and the 177.84 drivers, but have the same problem with the device emulation... (But on a GTX260) :( AFAIK you are the only one with Vista 64 who does not get the device emulation message... Come on - tell us what you did to make it work! ;-) pixelicious.at - my little photoblog |

Whre did you get 177.92 driver from ? The only ones on the cuda download page are 177.84. Did you try 177.84. Most (not all) people here running 177.84 are working OK. |

177.92 is a beta driver which was released yesterday. You can get it from nvidia.com ... I´ll give it a try if it works on my PC. pixelicious.at - my little photoblog |
