I've been running BOINC projects since the 1990s. Always in Windows of one flavor or another. Recently, I decided to make a concerted effort to move to Ubuntu 12.04. Or at least set it up so it is useful. I found it has almost everything I used in Windows 7 & XP and is now a bit more user friendly than earlier versions. Yesterday I installed BOINC (ver 7.0.24 I believe) and set up the various projects I participate in. GPUGrid downloaded a PAOLO work unit that would take about 20 hrs as I recall on my MSI N460GTX video card in Windows 7 on this machine. My machine is an AMD FX-6100 with 16 GB of 1866 MHz memory and, since early June, an MSI N580GTX video card. The 580 in this machine ran the PAOLO W/Us in about 10 hrs as I recall. Yesterday I had processed a PAOLO W/U for 3h 58m and the estimate to completion was 2h 2m. So it would appear Ubuntu is a bit faster than Windows 7. It was getting to be late in the evening so I suspended the project and shut the machine off. Now, when I try to start GPUGrind I get the message I wrote in the "Title" line. I've tried suspending and resuming at the 3 places I can find, "Task Commands", "Project Commands" & the bottom center of the BOINC Manager. My monitor is set to "Never" go to sleep and the screen saver is set to "None". My video drivers are the most recent recommended by Nvidia, 295.73 (?). So I am at a lose to know what to try next. I'd sure hate to lose the 4 hours of processing I've already put into that W/U.

ANY ideas will be greatly appreciated!

There are some useful FAQ's on crunching under Linux. I suggest you start there. In particular, have you set the recommended startup delay?

That's probably the issue!

You might also have to install Ubuntu updates, or if it comes to it, reinstall the driver.

A big THANKS for pointing me in the right direction! Inserting the "sleep 5" in the startup script and a reboot sent GPUGrid marrily on it's way again salvaging the 4 hours of time already put into the W/U. Since I started this quest, I kicked off some Wilkway@Home work also. 5 M@H CPU W/Us are running and now the GPUGrid GPU W/U is also running. Just like the "good ol' days".

The basic problem is that client doesn't detect a GPU. I met this issue when installed both Boinc&GPU driver from repository. When installed manually everything was OK.

I thought about something later:

On Monday I replaced my old slow 160 GB HD with a fresh Crucial 128 GB SATA III SSD. It boots extremely fast after my m/b logo disappears, like in 12 or 13 seconds. So now I think that fast boot process is why it didn't have the time it needed to detect the video card. Hence, "sleep 5" provides that time.

Always something to watch out for..........

Just a little note, the new App uses CUDA 4.2
which is about 50% faster than the older 3.1app.

Linux is a bit faster than Windows, but not that
much faster :) !

The good news is that 50% more work is being done
for the same amount of power.

The real thing is that the driver did not finish its intialization when BOINC client is started, that's why the delay solves the issue !
