It was all running fine yesterday. Everything is back to factory defaults. I deleted the device from device manager and going through reloading all of the drivers. Dang - this takes hours for all of the reboots. Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

Solved - 301.42 drivers. I am still not sure what happened. The 275 and 285 drivers would not work. Now all is well - at least for a while. Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

Retvari, Did you select the 980x specifically for gpugrid crunching? If you were to rebuild your rig today with gtx 690's in mind, which cpu would you select, and why? Thanks, Ken Florian |

Did you select the 980x specifically for gpugrid crunching? Yes I did it to have two real PCIe2 x16 slots. But an i7-970 can do almost the same work, and it can be overclocked the same as the 980x (in an appropriate motherboard). The i7-8xx series CPUs are also fine in a motherboard with two real PCIe2 x16 slots. I'm using an ASUS P7P55 WS Supercomputer motherboard with two GTX 480s. However, the higher the GPU utilization of a given workunit, the less it could gain from the higher PCIe bandwith. The present-day workunits are running with high (98-99%) GPU utilization (on WinXP), but I think there will be lesser GPU utilizing (80-85%) workunits in the future. If you were to rebuild your rig today with gtx 690's in mind, which cpu would you select, and why? First, I would select a socket 2011 motherboard with 4 PCIe3 x16 connectors (like Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 or GA-X79-UD7, ASUS P9X79WS or Rampage IV Extreme or Rampage IV Formula), to have 2 empty slots between the GPUs to allow better airflow. I think, the i7-3820 would do fine, but even so I would choose the i7-3930K (because it has 6 cores, and an unlocked CPU/BCLK ratio). There is not too much choice of FCLGA2011 CPUs available yet, so I would wait until the 22nm process will be introduced to the FCLGA2011 CPUs. |

Those with four slots on 2011 are x16, x16, x16 and x8 speeds. 40 lanes max. And if you are buying one FOR JUST THIS PROJECT, I would buy a 38i20 and turn hyperthreading off. If you plan to run CPU projects as well, then yes, if got the cash go for a 3930k. A 3820 can OC to 4.3 with multi though. Really not much benefit in going any higher IMHO. |
