All: Please provide information on your GTX 590 experiences. What is your computer configuration? What processor are you using? What operating system do you run? What size power supply do you have? Did you wreck any smaller power supplies when you started with your 590? Will the 590 work with Windows XP 32-bit? What type of RAC did you receive from the 590? Would you buy the 590 again or would you go with 2 GTX 570s? Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

Paul, If memory serves me correctly, I believe that when WirelessDude was running GPUGRID, late last year, his RAC was one of the highest on record. One of his PC's ID# 109655, had 4 GTX 590's back upped by an Intel Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz [Family 6 Model 44 Stepping 2] (24 processors), running on Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) In his hay day, I think he had a total of 8 GTX 590s on 3 PCs. If more info is needed, you would have to contact WirelessDude. |

We have 2 PC's with 590 on Linux, both 750W power supply. Both cards on stock clocks. CPU Intel i7. One card (2 GPUs) receives 330k credits per day with longrun tasks. But it's very hard to cool down these cards. If you crunch 7x24 you have to setup fans to maximum speed (90%) and temperatures are about 87°C. PS: Two 570's are much more better than one 590, I think. |

Rayzor: Thanks for the info. I have an existing system with an over clocked GTX 580 in it and I want to replace that 580 with a 590. The computer has an 850W PSU and Windows XP 32-bit. I have other computers that could take the 590 but the RAC on XP is great and I want to maximize the performance with this card. The specs call for an 850W PSU, and the card as a power requirement of just under 400W. That should leave plenty of room on an 850W PSU. I am also a little concerned that I will run out of RAM with a 32-bit OS. Perhaps Wirelessdude will help me. Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

I am also a little concerned that I will run out of RAM with a 32-bit OS. you got the left-over of 4 gigs on that host. unless you try to run big cpu-tasks alongside, you will not run into problems. just in case you want to know what to choose - check there: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/results/ram.py?plateforme=win&tri=projet&sort=asc |

Why not the GTX690? It's much better than the GTX590. FAQ's HOW TO: - Opt out of Beta Tests - Ask for Help |

Hi Paul! My main cruncher PC's configuration is: Intel Core i7-980x (running at 26x160MHz = 4.16GHz) Gigabyte GA-X58-OC motherboard Some 3x2GB 1600MHz DDR3 memory Corsair AX-1200 PSU (here is a really useful review about this PSU) Two GTX 590s, both running at 725MHz (a Gainward and an ASUS), fans set to 95%. The RAC of each card is between 350k and 400k. Case: none (the motherboard is actually on the floor) Operating system: Windows XP x64 SP2. A couple of 12cm ventilators Usually 4 GPUGrid tasks are running on this host with swan_sync=0 applied, and 2 rosetta@home (CPU only) tasks are running at the same time. Total power consumption (measured at the 220V AC outlet) is 1000W (±20W depending on the type of the GPUGrid workunit running) The GPU temperatures are 87°C and 80°C (inner card), 82°C and 76°C (outer card). (at 22°C ambient temperature) Previously I had an LC-Power LC-1000 V2.3 Legion X2 PSU, but it failed after 6 months. At that time this PC had different configuration consuming about 800W. The GTX 590 works well with Windows XP 32 bit, but the memory could be short, if you run memory consuming CPU tasks at the same time. That's why I changed to XP x64. |

It should be a matter of days until the app is released, which also runs on Keplers. So far they perform pretty good at GPU-Grid. We don't have hard numbers on power consumption yet, but they'll save a significant amount of money crunching 24/7 - and hence justify a higher purchase cost. Not sure about the GTX690 for 1000$, but GTX670 is certainly worth its money. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Thanks for the info. Here are some responses to a few of the questions: Skgiven: The 590 is an option for 2 reasons. First, it has drivers for Windows XP. Initial reports indicate the 6x0 series will only support Windows 7 and Linux. Second, I think I can find one on craigslist for about $500 - $600. The 690 would be great if I had lots of money :-) HA-SOFT: Two 570s or 580s would be a better solution but I am running out of slots on my computers. I have 2 open slots and would like to get as much power as possible. I may get 1 590 for my WinXP machine and get 1 580 for my Win 7 machine. Today I can get 580s on ebay for about $300 and I expect to see that price drop as the 670s and 680s become available. Cooling is a big issue and I may have 2 shut down a couple of computers for the summer. The 590 sounds like it could be a real cooling problem. Thx again Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

The recommended 301.42 WHQL driver should support a GTX690 on XP - at least it says it does at the NVidia site. Earlier WHQL and Beta drivers didn't support Kepler on XP - a point I raised. You're concern about the price is fair enough though - you might save $100 per year with a Kepler, but you would be a long time saving >$400. FAQ's HOW TO: - Opt out of Beta Tests - Ask for Help |

Got a GTX 590 on ebay for less than $500 with shipping. I hope it works correctly. In a few years, I can upgrade my GTX 590 with 690s when they hit the secondary market. I will keep you posted on the progress. I hope to have the 590 by the end of this week. Once it is installed, I will move around all of my GTX 570s and 580s to the other computers. The goal is a RAC of 1,000,000 or more. Are we getting any closer to understanding proteins? I only participate in GPUGrid for one reason and after thousands of hours, thousands of dollars and trillions of calculations, it would be nice to know if we are making any progress at all. Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

"Understanding Proteins" is a puzzle with many many parts. However, I think we're steadily making progress. You might want to take a look at the publications linked on the front page.. although they're not exactly "belles lettres". MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Paul, What were your reasons for buying a 590 at this time rather than wait for the 690? I understand a 590 can be had for half (or less) of a 690 but were there other reasons? The 590 is actually getting difficult to find. Ken |

I have 2 reasons: 1. Price. The GTX 590 is < $500 US on ebay 2. Slots - I am almost out of slots on my existing PCs. The 590 went into my XP system and is running very well. I would like to get another one and then I will be done for a while - unless I can find another PC. The 600 series is very expensive. I am happy to stay 1 generation back if it saves me hundreds of dollars. I hear we might find some used GTX 590s from GPUGrid crunchers that plan to upgrade to the 690. Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

Help - My GTX 590 is only showing 1 GPU! The computer rebooted overnight and now I only see 1 GPU. I reinstalled the drivers. Should I try a complete uninstall and reinstall? Yikes?? Do I need multiple monitors attached to start the GPUs? Thx - Paul Note: Please don't use driver version 295 or 296! Recommended versions are 266 - 285. |

My first GTX 590 is up and running at 662 MHz. Lots of fans are keeping it cool. Why don't you try factory settings on your GPU ? Or is this a factory overclocked one ? By the way move to 301.42 driver, seems to be available for X32 OS... Lubuntu 16.04.1 LTS x64 |
