I guess the whole problem has to with BOINC running as a service. I might also be related to the secure option. At least we are able to run applications when we don't use the secure service mode.

I try to install it as a service and change to "Local System" and my account, but this is the same issue.

So right now, we can't install it as a service.
Maybe this is an issue with the security on the folders and files.
Right now i don't have the time to test it, maybe tomorrow evening.

Jim PROFIT

We are already in touch with the BOINC group and Nvidia on the issue.
For now run it as you can...

The slow display will be sorted in one of the next application version, but it is a direct consequence of the fact that our workunits are really things that you would run on a supercomputer, so they are heavier.

gdf
PS: I still don´t understand the deviceQuery issue...

The only thing I don't get is why the application fully needs one of my CPU cores on the following hardware:

Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz
Coprocessor: GeForce 8600 GT

I hope this can be tweaked in the future, I also hope that when BOINC is better in supporting GPUs, more projects will start utilizing CUDA.

BOINC is quite good at supporting GPUs already, I think. All can be improved of course, for instance on Vista where we started to test just few days ago.
By the way thanks for finding the problem, that was very useful.
The CPU load is practically zero even it looks like is doing something. If you were running two other jobs, you would not notice much difference. It is only synchronizing calls to the GPU.

How come Folding@Home hasn't got this issue?
Next to this my machine gets very unresponsive from the application, which also suggest some issues with this. This also doesn't happen with folding@home.

Glad I could help sorting this out. Is the source code from the application available somewhere, so I might be able to look into that to, in order to look if some stuff can be optimized in respect to CPU usage/syncing.

Just start boinc.exe manually from it's folder and not as service works

It seems to be a Vista Service Privilege thing which I hope can be sorted out.

Very strange but it does not work for me.

I reinstalled BOINC and this time not as a service. BOINC now showed the GTX 260 at startup and I got 3 WUs ( 48573, 48499, 48498 ), but they all failed immediately with a nice windows-error-popup...

I'm running the project on GTX200, and as i have said, all works fine!
But with 2 cards, i can only use only for the project in both Vista 32 and 64.

Reset the project should correct the problem.

So, you have two cards on the same machine? You should be able to use both at the same time.

Which hostid are you referring to? I don't see any machine on Vista 64 crunching with your id!?? You have one with XP 64.

Well if it is this host, I wouldn't say all is running fine... ;)
So far all WUs errored out with

<core_client_version>6.3.10</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> The system cannot find the path specified. (0x3) - exit code 3 (0x3) </message> <stderr_txt> Cuda error in file 'deviceQuery.cu' in line 59 : initialization error. Please contact the application's support team for more information. </stderr_txt> ]]>

Which is the same error like I got it when BOINC was installed as a sevice...

But let's see what happens with the WUs that are in progress on this host.

Sorry, i made a mistake!

For this machine, i forget to reset the project when i try on Vista x64.
And this host have only a 8700M GT! So don't expect to have an incredible time.

I just try to run Boinc in Vista x64, and if i don't use the Secure Mode, Boinc show me my card.
But only one card. And i have one GTX 280 and one GTX 260 int this host
When i will be at home, i will try with my GTX 280 to see if all works fine.
These 5 hosts 7023, 7403, 7399, 6947, and 6639 are the same host but with different OS.

A question to the users with Vista64 and who are running gpugrid -

Does the acemd 6.43 application and BOINC 6.3.10 work for you if you don't install BOINC as a service?

I still have problems with Vista Ultimate 64 bit, BOINC 6.3.10 x86_64 and the 6.43 acemd application on my GTX 260.
The app crashes after one second with a Windows error message saying that the application isn't working anymore... Now I really would be interested why the application is crashing on my computer, but not on others with Vista 64? Someone else here with the same problem?

I already tried the 177.84 and 177.92 beta drivers, but with both I dave the same error.

Which drivers are you using on Vista 64? Do you use the 32- or the 64 bit BOINC Client? Anything special that have to be done, other than not to install BOINC as a service?

Thanks,
Stefan

service install is the ONLY option now with the 6.x.x series for windows.

I am running server 2008 x64 with the latest drivers (177.84) and while I haven't yet completed a work unit, I have not had any errors after running for 5 hrs on my 8800 GTS 512. I have the 64bit BOINC 6.3.10 installed. I installed both the app directory and data directory to their own directories on a non OS partition, and selected to give any user access to control BOINC.

would it be possible to put a link for the 64bit BOINC client on the home page with the 32bit win client? The 64bit clients will auto grab 32bit work when 64bit apps are not available from almost any projetc.

I'm sorry, but that's not right.

If you click the "Advanced" button on the configuration screen of the installer, and you don't select the "Protected application execution" BOINC is installed the old way.
You still would have the BOINC directories split to Program Files and ProgramData, but BOINC would not run as a service...

Here my configuration: Vista 64 bit, Nbvdia 177.92 with 64 bit, Boinc 6.3.10 with 64 bit and I clicked "Advanced" and *do not* click "Protected application execution". And it runs fine, I am happy.

Before I made a Boinc-installaton without "advanced" und run the Boinc.exe with administration rights and it crashes at the start.
