Hi, we have found an interesting side project for gpugrid. It's an experiment for us as well which could potentially increase funding. Let's see. For now, it's a good way to practice with opencl and ati. We have put 100 WUs, but you have to attach to this test project: http://www.donateathome.org gdf |

By the way, ATI cards are welcome there much more than Nvidia cards which are much slower. Still both will run in OpenCL. gdf |

Any hardware requirements? I imagine is just has to be able to run OpenCL software. |

Yes, it needs to be able to run OpenCL1.0. gdf |

My 7970 won't pickup any WUs for some reason... |

Think GDF is on to a real winner with this idea. Not quite enough points against GPUgrid tasks (30% less) to make it worth using Nvidia cards (although with less errors could be better for some users), but should get a lot of AMD cards here now from other projects. Great work guys. |

Simply I'm amazed! I dindn't know Bitcoins could be mined. If the cost of producing a Bitcoin is higher than real money, and people still contribute to this proyect rather than donate, I will think mankind has no solution. Anyway, I think the idea is great. |

I did a bit of research on bitcoin, and IMHO, the time to get in would have been when bitcoin was first launched. Each new bitcoin, as I understand it, is taking longer and longer to find because they are growing rarer and rarer. Also, the worth of a bitcoin does not go up even though each one takes longer and longer to find. So, IMHO, it was not worth it for me. |

This is a black day for BOINC. "You might also want to volunteer your computing time to do scientific calculations, then give a look at gpugrid.net" Shame in my opinion. GPU's and CPU's in BOINC are for sience not for making money! POLISH NATIONAL TEAM - Join! Crunch! Win! |

Sure, but we are not making money. We cannot make science without people working at gpugrid and we are facing now a big transition in the group, but again you have the option. Also in my personal opinion bitcoin is a great idea on its own which should be supported. gdf |

This is a black day for BOINC. Not for BOINC, but definitely for GPUGRID. Shame in my opinion. Agreed. Frankly, I'm shocked that GPUGRID is promoting an association with bitcoin. While bitcoin could solve some problems facing humanity in theory, in practice mining bitcoins does nothing more than provide casinos (bitcoin exchanges) with gambling chips. IMO, there's enough of that going on with fiat...adding crypto-currencies into the mix makes things worse, not better. I urge those in charge of GPUGRID to to reconsider the wisdom of this decision. If you guys are having money problems, there are other ways to raise cash. (now, where's that "Donate" button again?) Good or bad, bitcoin is controversial - and I take a dim view of charities I support engaging in controversial activities. Also in my personal opinion bitcoin is a great idea on its own which should be supported. While I'm not an economist by profession, my undergraduate degree is in econ and I've followed the development of bitcoin very closely as a matter of curiosity. I'd be interested in hearing why you believe bitcoin (in its current state) is worth supporting. Despite having a STRONG negative opinion of bitcoin, I stand ready to have my mind changed if the right argument comes along. ;-) |

This is a black day for BOINC. It just occurred to me that this project might be awarding BOINC credits for mining bitcoins...is this the case? If so, it is in fact a black day for BOINC. Very black indeed. |

Try to read the paper (it's posted at donate@home). The way bitcoin works deserve all respect, it's brilliant. I think that it's worth supporting because it might well end up that the idea taken from bitcoin, which for now I agree it's just an experiment, will end up in something major. Maintaining the network consumes flops, like any other activity. gdf |

Try to read the paper (it's posted at donate@home). The way bitcoin works deserve all respect, it's brilliant. If you're referring to Satoshi's paper, I read it long ago. I would agree that the concept is dazzlingly brilliant...even beautiful. However, my opinions about bitcoin are based on outcomes, not aesthetics. I won't bore readers of this thread with an essay on why I believe the bitcoin "experiment" has already failed (miserably), but I will point out that the objective laid out in the very first line of Satoshi's paper "A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution." has never been realized. There is no bitcoin economy to speak of outside the thinly traded, completely unregulated exchanges. __________________________________________ Since you're obviously moving forward with this project, I would hope that you will at least make it AMD only. Unless something's changed recently, nVidia GPUs make miserable bitcoin miners. Selling one of my nVidia cards and sending you the proceeds would be better than wasting electricity by using it to mine bitcoins. |

Yes, I meant that paper. I also agree that Nvidia is crap for donate@home (2/3 times slower), while even old ATI GPUs work really good. These older AMD GPUs will never be useful at gpugrid, but they can do something at donate@home. Good thing is that we have already found and solved several problems for running ATI opencl in just one day. This will be useful here soon. AMD has just shipped us the GCN card. gdf |

Try to guess how it should be if all BOINC projects will open a "side project" like donate@home... - what's BOINC? - bah... don't know, it was for scientific research but now... they are making money - ah ok, always the same ending |
