Is the graphics card memory required actually 254MB or is it a conservative estimate?

In practice it varies on the GPU, the task (and even the operating system).
For example, I have a GTX470 that is presently using 447MB GDDR5 to run a Long task.

Any GPU with less than 250MB is probably not up to the task of crunching for GPUGrid.
