I had a BSOD today with BCCode 116 on this system, and grabbed the latest (260.99) drivers from Nvidia. Now it doesn't seem to be getting new work. Messages at boot:

Well according to the Server Status page there are about 1100 acemd2 wu ready to send. So might be an issue on the GPUgrid end. I managed to pickup one about an hour ago, using same drivers as you but for a GTX460.

I've seen an assortment of statements lately about what drivers work with older cards such as my 9800 GT.

1. 260.99 doesn't work well for GPUGRID with any cards.

2. Only drivers before 257.15 work well with pre-Fermi cards. 197.45 is a good choice.

3. The installation instructions call for a CUDA 3.1 version, regardless of the card.

I've tried two versions in the last few days, neither of which seemed to allow downloading any workunits: 258.96 (which BOINC detects properly) and 197.45 (which BOINC treats as 186.27). What other versions are likely to produce better results, until the GTS 450 I've ordered is installed?

Yes, this is generally correct for Older cards (pre-Fermi), mostly CC1.1 and CC1.2 cards; If you use the 260.99 driver you will use GPUGrids 6.13app to crunch tasks and this is slower than the 6.12app for pre-Fermi cards. The driver itself is also buggy for these cards and often causes cards to run at reduced clock rates. Obviously if you have a Fermi use the latest driver and run the 6.13app; it's faster for Fermi's.

2. Only drivers before 257.15 work well with pre-Fermi cards. 197.45 is a good choice.

197.45 is a good choice for pre-Fermi crunching as it allows us to run the 6.12app, which is faster for many pre-Fermi cards and without the frequency bug.
For those with a pre-Fermi card that want to run the CUDA 3.1 app (6.13) then you can use any (full/non-beta) driver above 197.45, but avoid 260.89 and 260.99 if you can.

3. The installation instructions call for a CUDA 3.1 version, regardless of the card.

You do not need to install CUDA separately, just the appropriate driver.

If you installed any version of the CUDA toolkit, uninstall it and your present driver, reboot into safe mode and install 197.45 again, or an earlier driver (down to 195).

When you get your GTS450, install the latest driver (still 260.99 for that card), and from NVidia control panel, select to prefer maximum performance for the power management mode; right click on the desktop, open NVida control panel, Manage 3D settings.
