Ben, The gtx480 is the fastest at this moment. It works very good under windows-xp or linux and not so good under vista or windows-7. Good luck, Ton (ftpd) Netherlands |

If you've never tried Linux, I'd recommend . Ubuntu Desktop Edition Windows installer But if you already are familiar, I'd recommend Mint Linux 8 64bit Gnome or KDE. I've even made a copy/paste how2 guide. But if you've never tried & don't know if you really feel like it, I'd recommend the Ubuntu windows installer (WUBI), since it's fast & easy to install, but also quick & painless to remove. The latest Ubuntu is also up to date with driver updates, boinc client, & it's all done very easily. Mint Linux 8 I like because it's stable compared to many other versions of Linux, but a lot of it you have to do manually. Remember to use the 64bit version of Linux regardless of what you choose.

yea i dont understand linux codes. i just figured out they now make xp drivers for my machine so i will have to buy a new xp operating system. i dont mind as it really is worth the money with the resources it frees up. so looks like i will be crunching with the pros after all. any word on 295 vr 470. i really dont have the money for a 480 they are like double the price of a 470. at least for now. |

I'm very happy with my ASUS GTX470's. At present I think a GTX470 would almost but not quite match a GTX295 and a GTX480 would just about pip the GTX295. However I dont think a GTX480 is worth the extra money over a GTX470. The 470 is more future proofed, so I would go with that, unless you are offered a rediculously priced GTX295. So if you have to buy today I suggest you get a GTX470, however the next 3 weeks may see the release of a GTX475 and or GTX480. I'm not suggesting you actually buy one of these, but rather wait and see how the GTX475 performs and how the GTX460 starts performing (with new apps and drivers) and how the market is effected by the release of a GTX580; I expect prices to fall. |
