I've recently joined and I have left my computer running to determine the merits of the GPUGrid.

The ETA for completion is approx 74 hours (and rising) and the dealine is in approx 78 hours time.

I'm concerned that firstly, I will not be able to meet this deadline, and secondly, was wondering if there is any way I can dedicate one of my two CPU 's to help give it a boost.

Am using the default preferences so any help will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: my processor is a Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT

You may get a WU back in the 5 day deadline but it will re-issued after 2 days to a fast host and the result will probably be returned before you've finished yours.
You of course will still get basic credit but your result will be discarded and you'll have wasted your time.

Are you sure? So I've been burning electricity ONLY for the sake of heat & credits on my 9400mGP for months now? That's so not cool! I was even about to purchase a Windows 7 license, so I could stop using Linux on my HTPC. It "looks" like I have 2x8800GT, but that's not my fault, because not even BOINC sees it that way.

Now I'm left with a moral dilemma, just let it be & not effect credits, or disable it & go down (very, very slightly). But I hate it when I have a PC that does nothing (or less), I see it as a slacker that I actually paid for.

Walshaid, as Betting Slip correctly said, your 8500 GT is too slow. So it would be best if you did not try to crunch any more tasks with that card. Perhaps some time you will have a better card for crunching with and will be able to contribute.

liveonc, If I were you I would think about another GT240 for that system, or a better card; with new cards comming out soon (but wait and see that they work).

It might bring 4700 points back every 3.5 days, which is better than nothing, but in terms of energy usage it's not a good return for your investment. Not using it would only reduce your input by about 1.3%

Walshaid, that's a good question. Unfortunately we cannot go by what is indicated by the Boinc Manager (When you try to click on Attach to Project it indicates GPU projects). These are not up to date.

MilkyWay requires a ComputeCapable 1.3 card. Yours is CC1.1, so will not work there.

Aqua is listed but last time I checked it was not using the GPU anymore.

I dont know if your card would be of much use if any for Collatz and PrimeGrid (Maths Projects), but you could ask in their forums, and do the same for Aqua and dnetc (encryption).

Not sure about Seti either, it did use GPUs, but they might have stopped?

The Lattice Project occasionally uses GPUs, but not very often (we are talking 1 or 2 tasks per month).

Einstein might be your best bet, although it only uses a small amount of the GPU.

I just tested my new GT240 again in several Cuda-projects, here are my experiences:
GPU-Grid: you know, my new one is fine, my old 8600 was too slow, especially on Linux.
Einstein: I depends heavily on the combination of CPU/GPU whether it' good or even bad. my old 8600 slowed the WUs down by nearly 50%, my new 240 increases the speed by ~5%, with blocking of the whole GPU. fast CPU, slow GPU -> bad performance. See this thread over there.
Collatz and DNETC: Will probably work fine, although I'm in doubt about the usefulness of this kind of science, but that's my personal taste.
Milkyway: double precision needed, so at least 260
Seti: Can't say anything as it's Windows only, but probably will work
Prime, Aqua, Lattice: currently no GPU app running

If you like to do protein research, and hav windows running, why not try Folding at Home? It's a different client, but works fine afaik. As it's Windows-only I have no first-hand experience though.

I have attached to SETI@home and since doing so after detaching GPU I have found that my card seems adequate for this project.

Whilst it may not grant me many points, at least I get to utilise my GPU for folding.

I am also investigating upgrading my card so will bear the above advice as well, but in the meantime, once again, many thanks for your help guys.

Your GPU could crunch Collatz, Dnetc and Seti tasks (these projects uses a bit of a CPU) or Einstein (1 CPU + 1 GPU, but low credit for used GPU). Other projects as The Lattice, Ibercivis, DrugDiscovery, AQUA etc. doesn't offer GPU tasks now.

POEM is working an a GPU-Client. I hope it will be ready this year. Perhaps they can use your 8500 GT.
