Message 34674 - Posted: 15 Jan 2014, 14:34:16 UTC - in response to Message 34635.

I know some SETI fans might not like it but thought I'd share the story.
When I did my masters I took a course in astrophysics. At some point when we discussed Drake's equation, the professor, mentioning SETI, said: "Maybe people should start by looking for terrestrial intelligence first and then look for extraterrestrial one".
Caused a few laughs :D He was quite the funny guy.

I heard that story somewhere else before :)
Drake's equation is a hopeless attempt to figure out an unknown value by multiplying an estimated number with six unknown ratios. If it wasn't called equation, but estimation or guessing it would be OK. I understand that it is a scientific way to solve the whole problem by splitting it to smaller problems, but the only function of this equation is to name the obvious parts of the whole problem. It could be done by anyone who has some common sense, but there's too much variability (and debate) in the values of the seven factors in the equation.

Well, lets not get so judgmental here Dagorath :) Even though I also don't believe they will find anything and the time would be better spent elsewhere. But to each his own. There is worse stuff being done than looking for aliens. Plus I understand that it must be nearly impossible to run GPUGrid while on holidays with all the problems that occur. As he said, I hope he comes back once holidays are over :D

Zoltan: I definitely heard it in class though. Must be a popular joke so maybe the prof heard it from somewhere else and liked it. Yeah Drake's equation is relatively pointless if only to name the variables as you said.

I hope they don't discover ET until were ready, even Carl Sagan realized he made a mistake having those gold plated records attached to the Voyager probes. Who was it that said "When in the jungle, it's best not to cry out"? It's definitely a jungle out there, a wilderness if you will, there's bound to be predators.

Wow, wasting 3 690s and the electricity it takes to run them to look for a signal that exists but will never be found when they are badly needed for real problems is irresponsible. Someone should pass a law to make that kind of waste illegal and shut that stupid project down.

Not 3. 6x690. Plus 2x770 and one 780. All in 3 rigs.
And take in that equation that I do live in a country that hardware cost 2x what it cost in USA. Can you say U$ 2k for a 690? Well, you need to be nuts. I am, thank god. Rippig off some heads and having fun elsewhere now, but im on the long run.
And you should blame Stoneageman. I don´t like to be on second. Wait for the 790´s... be warned Stone ;)
Oh yes, there is a guy on the stupid project that found a way to run 4x690´s in a single rig, but it´s summer in here and GPUGRID run all 5/10°C hotter than SETI. Unnatended 80°C rigs? Nope.

Yes, SETI may be wrong. But i´m there since 1999 and I would never build such a farm without it. And I learn a lot about hardware there. They know things in that such big community. My rigs aren´t that big without a reason. And when I point the guns back to GPUGRID, you can bet that a lot of science will be done again.

$2K US is nuts! Next time you want a new card let me know. I'll buy it for you here in Canada and ship it to you. I could put it in a different package or disassemble it and ship it in pieces to fool the customs guards. But I won't do that for Stoneageman because he was naughty and took your top spot. I will do that only for you ;-)

Yes, there is a lot of knowledge at SETI but we don't have to have a stupid project to have knowledge. We can have all that knowledge at a worthy project.
