This forum is now used for the upcoming multicore CPU application. If you want to run on CPUs for GPUGRID you need to accept beta work. gdf |

I'm up for that one - preferences set to accept cpu & cpu test work. Regards Zy |

Sounds interesting! :) Do you have an idea when the multicore tasks will be available? Just attached my 8 core server but only get the "Your computer has no NVIDIA GPU" message... pixelicious.at - my little photoblog |

Do you think CPUs will bring a big computing power to the project ? I always thought that GPU was far better. (But as with Aqua, it doesn't seems so) |

CPU will be marginal at GPUGRID. For certain short workunits we can use CPUs as well, but work will be most likely going in bursts. Anyway, we are waiting for AMD to fix the OpenCL implementation. It works locally but it is quite difficult to distribute. Hold on here. gdf |

cool... i assume this is a mutli-threaded app correct.. like aqua@home??? |

Yes multithreaded. thank you for clearing that (technical jargon) up.. my boinc client is open and willingly to accept the new cpu work, i'll keep my work queue low so that it ask for cpu work.. |

sounds great, I'm excited to see how this project is expanding. :) We still need a thread where the current WUs are explained imo... |

Please note that the recent run of recommended BOINC clients (v6.10.17 / v6.10.18) are less than ideal for running multi-threaded CPU applications if you are also attached to projects which issue standard single-threaded CPU applications. The multithreading works fine, but CPU cores can be left idle when the other projects should be running. The next version of BOINC should have an attempt at fixing this: alternatively, I find that BOINC v6.10.13 handles the mixture better. In short, be aware that multi-threading support in BOINC is still at the beta stage, and it might be worth keeping an eye on BOINC developments too if you want to try out this GPUGrid beta. |

did the project hit a speed bump with this subject or have some wu's gone out? |

BOINC v6.10.19 can now be downloaded for testing, and handles task-switching with singled-threaded CPU projects much better than .17 or .18 |

To date we have been unable to get an acceptable level of performance on even the highest end processors (dual X5570), so we've paused development of this application for the moment. We will review it again as OpenCL CPU compilers improve. Matt |

While it's true that performance and productivity will never come close to GPU crunching I strongly believe the option for CPU crunching should be made available. Just make the CPU WUs smaller so that they don't take more than a day to crunch. IMHO folding@home is so successful and attracts so many people simply because they offer clients and WUs that can be processed on single core or multi-core CPUs as well as GPU based clients and WUs. |

I agree with coldFuSion. Still many don't have a supported GPU, as long as ATI doesn't work, that's a lot of people, plus all those with neither Nvidia nor ATI. Maybe extra credits for CPU only tasks would help too. WCG even made a Facebook APP that doesn't require BOINC client to be installed. Even a million drops adds up to something even though a drop itself isn't much.

Perhaps, but not so much for the present as for the future: There are lots of 6 and 8 threaded CPUs, and a few with 12threads. Although these are not quite quick enough, some people even have dual socket systems with 24threads, which could finish present WU's in time. However, most people would probably not want to use their CPU here, as well as their GPU, and would prefer at least some of their CPU was used for other (CPU) projects. So that only leaves people without an NVidia GPU and with an Extreme end CPU/system. Most of that group are likely to have ATI cards, with only a few people having basic cards. Even then you would be competing against Aqua (who use multiple cores). Smaller tasks would be more server and bandwidth intensive, and perhaps more labour intensive. The future of CPUs is definitely with multi cores; not just dual or quad, but 24 and 48 cores (for single socket systems). So perhaps just before the release of these mainstream CPUs (2011) GPUGrid might want to reconsider using CPUs again. Ultimately it's down to what the research team can support. If bringing in CPU apps is too labour intensive, it’s a non-starter. There is only so much work a small team can do, and the return using CPUs for the manual labour put in would be a lot less than for GPUs! Perhaps GPUGrid would be better spending their spare time, if they have any, trying to get ATI cards up to speed? |

I hope this is brought back near the front of the list after the ati app is out and working, i have one nvidia card that can run gpugrid, and a ati(2600 xt), that maybe able to run the new ati app, well see, but i doubt that it would be fast enough to make a deadline, i would however like to use my quad core q6600 and one of my old p4-ht systems for gpugrid. just giving the thread a little massage.
