Self flagellation time with a tale of "oooppps" :) I just relearnt the oldest lesson in the Windows book "Thou shalt clean out old Graphics drivers before installing new ones" ........ I didnt ...... it cost me untold grief, a system reload, a new hard disk, several dents in the office wall, and a cat who now clearly understands what "out!" means rofl :) I have had genuine hardware hassles going back a while, and they did settle, then murphys law interveened to make sure I was not bored, and graphics drivers got messed up. Soooo, I reinstalls a new set .... and did not clean out the old first. Anyway ...... after a long session of grief and cursing, the penny dropped as they say. So I nipped over to my old stalwarts at http://www.guru3d.com and downloaded their Driver Sweeper. Whilst there are others out there, this one worked for me, very easy to use. I deinstalled all graphics drivers, display and physX, booted up in Safe mode, ran the tool and behold a list of old Nvidea stuff a yard long, display & physx, that should have been zapped by the de-install ........ grrrrrr :) Used the tool to remove them, all easy and painless, rebooted ending up in 'good old 640' graphics mode. Installed the new driver set (64bit 186.18 - keeping away from 190.xx for the present ....). Rebooted and back in clean as a whistle, rock solid. So if you are tempted to reinstall without cleaning ...... dont rofl:) You might get away with it, as clearly I had done for a while, but eventually the undeleted garbage backlog catches up .... and booom time. The choice is thine of course, but here's one who has learnt an old lesson the hard way. I will not be doing that again. If your having hassles after a graphics driver reload and you didnt cleanup after "deinstall", worth checking .... Regards Zy |

I just relearnt the oldest lesson in the Windows book "Thou shalt clean out old Graphics drivers before installing new ones" ........ Ack! Had the same problem while dowgrading from 190.38 to 186.18, but I used the hard way with manually edit of the registry and delete the files from the system. Good to know, that there is a tool ... :)

Hi, a great site! They offer a newer driver, 190.40 (Beta). Has anyone tried this one? Alexander |

Guru3D is very good, they have long been on my list of favourites. Always reliable unbiased practical reporting and reviews together with good access to advice on the plethora of items we all want in PC computing. There is also a very good forum attached to the site where the regulars are very experienced PC gurus - the type who believe fun is attending a seminar on the i7 register, and use subliminal techiniques to update their latest thinking on that nano powered PC they are always constructing :) A good site and very helpful knowledgeable forum - they have helped enormously over the years. Just remember to say please and thank you ..... then there is nothing they will not do to help you. Nice guys. Regards Zy |

I don't wanna sound rude or anything, but I and a ton of other people I know never had this problem within the consumer or IT community and we're in since the eldest of days. Consider us lucky? Never seen the point in those driver sweepers... |
