It used to work with one Linux installed (at least YDL and Fedora) for us. Maybe you have different Linux distributions and the bootloader must become confused.

This pen drive is done for people who would not install Linux otherwise. It\'s quick and easy, but if you have Linux installed you have a much more powerful and flexible system.

Apparently, in 2.10 there was a change in the framebuffer so the display does not work with previous otheros.bld.

If it works we will update the pen drive.

It did not work for me.
I have EU std 60GB version without any mods. I.e. no Linux on PS3 HD, running from Pendrive.

Please give some more info?

I updated my PS3 from fw 2.0? to fw 2.10 21.dec. After that it do not boot from usb stick anymore. Before my update, it had been chrunching since 2.dec. During this period, I have rebooted some times after playing etc.
Now, no light in LED in usb stick and TV screen is black. PS3 do not seem to boot.
I dl the otheros.bld file from the link above, and overwrote the one on my usbstick. When I try to start PS3 from \"other os\": Still no light in LED in usb stick and TV screen is still black.
My TV (PAL) showed Linux on \"Auto\", 480i and 1080p before the fw update.
I use the HDMI connection.

it is important that you reinstall the otheros.bld from the gameos. Have you done it?

I have three partitions with OpenSuSE 10.3, PSUbuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.04), and FedoraDog (my description)7, the one that is slower than hardened molasses :-). Depending on which otheros.bld file I load, I can boot them up, but I have to switch around as I have yet to find an otheros.bld file that allows selection of any of the installed distros I have. The SuSE boots the SuSE and the Fedora, and from CD, but won\'t boot the Ubuntu, and the Ubuntu will only boot the Ubuntu, or CD. Those are the graphical petitboot builds though. So far, with any straight, non-graphical kboot build, I only see the first partition, and it won\'t boot in many cases (ubuntu).

I wish the kboot loader didn\'t need the kboot.conf file, and would allow slections based on partition. Then USB booting would seemingly be a cakewalk.

Today, I began experimenting with Gentoo Live CD, and trying to get it up on a USB stick. It uses ext3 fs and if I get it working, I will add the GRID software if I can get it somewhere. Apparently, they have an otheros.usb file somewhere out there that gets renamed to the dot bld name. Gentoo\'s site also has some pretty comprehensive info on kexec, and kboot. I am still digging. I like the way their live distro boots from cd. It has all 8 birds, tab key shows all their boot selections, and that is a good sign. Once I find out how to hit the USB at boot time, I will perhaps add USB entries to the CD\'s kboot.conf file.

It was required to be able to copy files on the usb from Windows.

Huh? I thought that FAT32 and Windows both handled long file names. It allowed me to change mine from windows to the four letter extension. Weird.

So is that also the only reason it is even on FAT32? So that a person can get the files on the stick from within a windows machine? Does that mean I can also run a Linux OS live boot, and set the stick up with an ext3 partition by copying the files to it from within Linux?

My PS3 seems to be bricked now...

I had the old bootload running. Didnt know anything about the new one. Took the PS3 to a friends house to play some games. Booted back to the normal PS3 OS.

When i got home and tried to go back to Linux, it just boots to a black screen. My TV reports no HDMI input signal. I just get a green light.

Any ideas?

After browsing the Playstation forums and other sites, i found the solution!

If you EVER seem to brick it, you can do a hard reset! This will NOT format the drive or loose any data except config settings.

1. Turn the PS3 off using the switch in the back.
2. Turn the PS3 back on using the switch in the back (so the light is red).
3. Hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until you hear 3 beeps about 3-5 seconds apart.

The system will now automaticly reboot it self. If will look like you just bought it. Asking all the questions about video options, etc. Once you boot back up, you will be back at the XMB with the Theme or anyhting you had before.

I typically just hold the power button for three beeps and then restart the game OS. In most situations you shouldn\'t need to switch the PS3 off through the switch on the back. You\'ll still need to reset your audio/video options and don\'t forget to set it to load \"other OS\" upon reboot.

I just found a good resource for this PPC64 Linux under the PS3 situation.

The kboot section is very informative, and I am sure many of you already know about this site. From what it ssays, when using the three letter extension on kboot.conf, it should be a dot cnf file, not dot con.

I upgraded my firmware from 1.92 to 2.10 and realized i couldn\'t boot. Followed the fix sugested here and it worked.
But on the boinc benchmarks it only recognised 1 CPU instead of 2. I have a wu 82.941% completed and the estimated time to completion is increasing. I will let it run by the night, if the performance is afected drastically i will suspend the partipation on this project until there is a fix.

This is correct, because the 6-SPE\'s cannot be shared between 2 applications without drastically affecting performance. It is better to only run 1 application and let it use all 6 SPE\'s where most of the processing takes place. It has been tested and it is better running only 1 app using 6-SPE\'s instead of 2 apps which would have to share and only have 3-SPEs.

Ignore the benchmarks which can only measure the performance of the PPE CPU. It is not able to measure the performance of using the 6-SPE\'s. This has already been taken into account by the project and made adjustments.

Now on another note: I have had 16 to 23 computers running various BOINC projects for about 3.66 years earning 3M credits. In the last 131 days I have earned another 1M credits, of which more than 1/2 of that was with my one PS3.

But on my account shows 2 CPU instead of one and i am only running ps3grid. Before this change i was running one wu at a time. The info about previous benchmark was misleading and it would have showed 1 instead of 2? and now 1 is the correct value?

This is correct, the PS3 has 2 CPU\'s in the PowerPC main processor. This would show as 2 on the website, which shows the physical capabilities of the CPU.

There is an override file to limit the BOINC client to only run on 1 CPU, thus only 1 task runs at a time, but that 1 task has access to all 6 of the SPE cells. This is why the benchmarks will show 1 CPU because of this override file which is the limit being placed on the client, so the benchmarks are only for 1 CPU.

If you physically had 2 tasks running, they would have to share the SPE\'s, like each would only be able to use 3 SPE\'s or wait for SPE\'s to be available, thus each task would take twice or more as long as 1, thus there is no gain to running 2 at the same time.
