I had my PS3 at least attempting to boot from USB stick the other day, but the newest firmware 2.10, which I installed last night, goes as far as turning off the lit (active) USB drive just as it boots, and the otheros.bld file you have us install sits there, and doesn\'t even bring kboot up at all.

We have had some problems with 2.01, but it did boot. Do you have 2.1 or 2.01?

I would much rather that we express our immense disdain to Sony directly. It was silly of them to make the machine switch off the USB sticks as the boot loader loads when under \"boot other OS\", as they shouldn\'t even care.

I also have found that my PSP is no longer recognizable under Vista, since its last firmware update. They got some real dopes working over there.

I just loaded 2.10 last night. I had problems with 2.01 as well (my GRID debut was a couple days ago). It saw the stick, but the only tab selections were \"Linux\" and \"old\", which were from the first partition of my HD, but even they would not load from your boot loader. After loading the graphical boot loader I used to use, at least I got my HD install functions back.

I\'ll have to hunt up the GRID files for that to run from within one of the installed distros I have in place. I was so wanting to have a USB bootable system, because that opens up a LOT of live distro experimentation. Maybe we can convince them to put things back the way they were. It is almost as if they are toying with their entire customer base, like it is some game. I find it more than a bit annoying.

Just to add to this - I just updated to 2.10 from 2.01 and now I can no longer boot from the USB stick grrr. Is there a way around this?

I had the same problem but found another otheros.bld on the web and installed that. Linux is running off the usb stick but i\'m not sure if its using the 6 spe\'s as well as the 2 ppe\'s.

I\'ll try to post a link to it later and let you decide

When Shaggy installed a different other-os it went abck to working, I think a re-install of the correct other-os might have the same effect, but I make no guaranetees, just a thought.

Yes I\'ve reinstalled Linux as per the instructions and no joy.

I\'ve tried various otheros.bld\'s and it seems only a \'standard\'one will allow linux off a usb stick but it crunch\'s very slow. Other bootloaders either do not start or will not see the usb stick at the kboot prompt.

Oh well time for a partition and an install of gentoo linux.

I think Sony have beefed up security as some people were gaining access to the RSX chip through linux and this may lead to firmware cracks eventually so Sony have locked up the system a bit.

Mine had no change in failed behavior upon re-installing a previously USB aware otheros.bld. I was only able to get an otheros.bld file that looks at HD partitions to work, and then only for HD partitions, as I stated.

I said i\'d try but it would mean tracking down where i got it from and then posting the link here and i\'m not sure how much time i have to do these things.

As it is the otheros.bld that i used did boot from usb but it took 8 hours to process 3% at which point i stopped and started looking for another file.

otheros.bld should affect performance. If it boots then it should be fine. We will be unable to do serious testing until after holidays unfortunately.

Tried the linked otheros.bld and got the same result. Think I will just do a normal YDL install on the hdd and be done with it.

Perhaps for you. It still does not work for a machine that has a Linux install on the HD. The only thing the otheros.bld file points at is the HD, and the tab key only shows that partition. So what is needed is the boot string required to boot from sda1, which is the device assigned to my USB drive. That boot string MIGHT point to the USB drive, which is now at least turned on. All folks garnering success from this otheros.bld file must not have any Linux on their HD. Still no worky here.
