you can set the screen resolution. When the system boots, at the kboot prompt press tab and you should see several graphics modes. We have set the default to the minimum to make sure that it could work everywhere.
On our monitor we use sxga.

To determine the best resolution to use, check out this graphic, Video Standards, at wikipedia to determine if you should use XGA, WVGA or something different for a 1080 TV screen.

I am using the YUV1080P option when you press TAB. It doesnt quite select the right resolution though. MY HDTV reports 1920x1080, but in the resolution settings of YDL it says 1688x964. /shrug

I gave the YUV1080P a try, All I can say is WOW, Looks great on my Sceptre 37in 1080p. That looks good enough, the image is centered with some black area all around, but not too much, so its not bad.

I had this issue.
None of the options work on my non-HD tv.
Ended up resorting to using BAM to setup the account manager.
All running away fine now.

I figured out how to change the default screen resolution mode on the live linux version, so you do not need to press tab a bunch of times every time the PS3 boots up live linux.

This was not easy, but not that difficult. Since all the files are owned by the root user (which I do not have the password for), the casper user cannot change them.

Shut down the PS3
Take your Memory Stick or USB Drive to a another computer. I used a WindowsXP computer, but I guess a linux computer would work also.
My instructions below are for WindowsXP.

Insert the card and if a window does not pop up, open one for it in my computer.
Next select and open the folder \'etc\' with a double left click
You will see one file called kboot.con
Right click on the kboot.con file
Select Properties
Change the read-only attribute to off (un-checked) and OK the changes.
Right click on the kboot.con file
Select Open
Choose Select the program from a list, and OK
Un-check the \'Always use the selected program...\' box
Scroll down the list and double-click Notepad

There will be one long line of text
Scroll right with right arrow (unless you know the resolution you want)
Select the text for the resolution you want as your default, move mouse to beginning of text, hold down left button and move mouse right to end of text, release button

I selected \'yuv1080p\'. Copy this by right-click on this selected text and selecting copy.
Press Home on keyboard
Look for the text \'default=auto\' and select the word \'auto\' (as above) and replace the text with the copied text, right-click and paste.
Be careful NOT to replace the little boxes symbol just after the text auto or any other text in the line.
If you goof up, exit without saving and start over.
On the menu select file and save
Exit notepad
Close the etc window. For USB devices select safely remove hardware and stop the device first.

Take your device back to your PS3, insert it and power on.

When kboot comes up, do not do anything but wait 10 seconds and it should continue and then change into the resolution mode you selected.

It works !!!!!!!!!!!!
