Sorry, can´t agree with this statement. It never hurts to wait some days until new driver and software had been checked for their benefits.

People with computing errors or driver issues may test new software if they can´t contribute workunits at all and GPUs are running idle otherwise. I would prefer stable systems to (assumed) faster but unstable.

I think the analogy "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind.

I don't think it hurts to be ahead of the curve as long as you have a contingency plan if it hits the fan.

I've been on a quest to fix a problem with Boinc since 6.4.5 so I tend to have the latest driver and Boinc version in the hope of a resolution, though I haven't had success yet!

I would tend to agree. upgrade only when needed ... Which is why for example I suggest sticking with 6.5.0 unless you have a need for more features. Those of us that have "upgraded" have been fighting a never ending stream (it seems) set of bugs with the new generation.

I do much like the new time display and am trying very hard to unbug the various versions, but, there are standing issues and each version has its own new ones (at times) though I am on the verge of saying that 6.6.28 is the next version beyond 6.5.0 if you MUST upgrade. Or to be clearer, if you are going to use a later version than 6.5.0 my prior recommendation was 6.6.23 but now it will be, I think, 6.6.28 (still a little early, I have only been running it two or three days - but it HAS cured one of my longstanding issues with BOINC, note two, 6.6.29 is a Mac only bug fix).

The same caution applies to video drivers. I am running 182.50 and have heard of no compelling reason to upgrade beyond that ... yet ...

Anyone tried this package? Which driver does it include?

Generally the "get CUDA" provides you with a CUDA toolkit (not needed), exmple code (not needed) and the CUDA enabled driver.. which is no other than the normal driver you'd download anyway. NVidia is just confusing people with this "get CUDA" thingy.

@Paul: a small speed increase seems to be related to the 185 series drivers. but it's small, so it's difficult to measure within the normal "noise" of completion times and different WUs.

I can confirm that "cudadriver_2.2_linux_64_185.18.08-beta.run", the latest version for ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 dies a horrible death. See http://www.gpugrid.net/result.php?resultid=650829 . NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.22-pkg2.run, the latest 2.1 version for ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 runs better. It has not completed any wu's, but at least it is seems to be trying. I will know for sure tomorrow. Both were tested with the recommended boinc_6.4.5_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh version of boinc.

Ubuntu 9.04 comes with driver version 180.44, which works fine.
Also upgrade from 8.10 went smoothly and was uneventful. Crunching took of right from the start without any issues at all.

seems to work fine on my vista computer. no complaints. i notice that it is a little faster but not a huge jump. a few minutes difference on gpu and a couple seconds faster on seti@home.
