Which version boinc client are you using ?

Did you download from this site, see front page, or from berkely.edu ?

At the current time you need to downlaod the version from this site, the official releases do not yet support ths PS3 platform.

I (or others) will try to help you, but we need your help to fully understand the problem.

Some version of boinc ?

That does not help very much. A specific version number would be better. Then at least I have a frame of reference to start off with as the whole problem may be version specific. The problem you describe is more a boinc thing than a linux thing. the version or flavor of linux probably has little bearing on this.

Are you running just the core_client or the core_client and boinc_manager ?

When you start up the boinc manager for the first time, it will report a bunch of system settings in the message log, like memory, processor, version and projects attached to. If you can cut and paste that here, that may be a big help.

Are you sure that you have really running the ps3grid boinc client? (it should have written \"by ps3grid\" on the top bar).
Maybe ubuntu has the boinc client installed and you are actually running the default installation.

Hmm, I´m no Linux pro, but maybe I can help you to install BOINC...

First, use Synaptic to uninstall the old BOINC client and BOINC manager.

Download the PS3GRID BOINC Client from here.
Extract the archive.
Move the extracted file to your /user folder.
Open a terminal and cd to your user folder.
Type sh boinc_5.10.6xxx or whatever the extracted file is called.
That should create a new folder BOINC in your user directory...
To start the client (and to let it run in the background) click on start_client in the BOINC folder.
To run the gui (BOINC Manager) click on run_BOINC.

That is how I installed BOINC on my Ubuntu computers and on my PS3 with Yellowdog Linux, so if you follow it step by step, it should also work for you. At least I hope... ;)

Maybe there are other ways to install BOINC, but like I said before, that´s the way it worked for me...

Greets,
Stefan

Third attempt to post a message with a link, I hope I come through the spam filter now...

After a closer look I see why you get these unknown platform messages...

If you would like to crunch for SETI@home with your PS3, you need an app_info.xml and a special application for the PS3.
There´s a forum thread about the PS3 app at SETI@home : http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=39910
But the last post is dated 24th July 2007 and it looks like the app wasn´t really running fine...

But of course you can now with the right platform \'powerpc64-ps3-linux-gnu\' attach your PS3 to PS3GRID where the app works really fine and you´ll get a lot of credits too! ;-) Also the scientific research done by PS3GRID is probably more interesting for mankind than what SETI does... ;-)

Everyone else beat me to it, I had a busy day at work, but they had the right answers. It was the version of boinc you were running.

The only project you will be able to run at the current time on your PS3 is PS3GRID. Other projects do not officially support the PS3 yet.

You can attach to SETI@home and SIMAP, but it is not as easy as just attaching, you need to download manually the client executables and create and application override xml file for each. See link Stefen posted for the seti forum about this.

I have successfully got SIMAP to run when they have work.

I think Zombie got both SIMAP and SETI to run.

You would be more productive at this time only running PS3GRID on the PS3, until other projects add official optimized PS3 Applications.

The boinc client is due for a release to support the PS3, sometime soon, we hope. Dr. Anderson will be meeting with the PS3GRID group in September and the modifications they have made are scheduled to be incorporated into the boinc client as supported on the berkeley site. Once that happens other projects may be more inclined to add a PS3 application

Reall the same error? Can you copy and paste the error message?
There was no work available, but now there´s enough work again!

With the PS3GRID BOINC Client you should get work from PS3GRID since it shows the correct platform now... (At least it showed it yesterday... ;-) )

Hey, it´s getting better! ;-)
Your PS3 has already downloaded two WUs today, but they errored out with:

<core_client_version>5.10.6</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 127 (0x7f, -129)
</message>
<stderr_txt>
ga2_5.01_powerpc64-ps3-linux-gnu: error while loading shared libraries: libspe.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

</stderr_txt>
]]>

Try to do a search for libspe via Synaptic and install the libraries...
If you have installed them your PS3 should be able to crunch for PS3GRID. But you have to wait until tomorow because there´s a limit that you can download only two WUs per day...

Hope you get it working now!

This error was previously reported in thread http://www.ps3grid.net/PS3GRID/forum_thread.php?id=21

YDL includes PS3 support, so it installs the necessary libraries.

While other linux will run on the PS3, the library required is not automatically installed.

But you are right with YDL. Makes it easier to crunch for PS3GRID... ;-)
