From my perch in the US I find it impossible to access GPUGrid.net or to UL or DL WUs using a Win7 computer.

My Linux Mint 19.3 rigs work fine but they're headless. So I converted a desktop Win7 to Linux and that's how I got back into the forum.

Probably using too old a BOINC client. Most of the projects have updated their security in SSL and the older clients have too old of a authentication package.

Need to update the client or get a newer ca-bundle.crt file.

Setting the logging option for http_debug would have shown the error.

Win7 64-bit works for me with BOINC 7.16.4, though I run Rosetta and Einstein on an RX 570 on that machine.
For GPUGrid, I use it only to access the website. The work is done on Ubuntu 18.04.4 machines.

Win7 is running 7.14.2 and Check for Updates says there are no newer versions. BTW, my browser says GPUGrid.net "Connection is not secure."

I found \BOINC\ca-bundle.crt but it says it expired in 2018. Played with the certificate snap-in and there are several versions of Globalsign certs but nothing related to BOINC. I cannot find a way to update or renew it.

I think I got the new cert installed on 2 Win7 rigs. Now I have to wait 24 hours for the Quota Devil to release them to find out if this worked. My RAC is still stuck at less than half of its present value.

When I installed the new cert it killed my WCG connection. So I reinstalled BOINC 7.14.2 and it sort of works in a very hit or miss fashion. ULs & DLs take hours to complete, if ever for one rig.
Looks to me like Win7 is useless for GPUGrid.net.

Toni, Is there any reason why Win7 finds it almost impossible to UL & DL WUs???

Converted another rig to Linux and it runs like a dream.

And I thought you just performed some magic as the 3 hung ones starting working again.
Fingers crossed that they keep going.

Whatever your problem is, it isn't Windows 7.

My three Win 7 machines are uploading and downloading just fine - I'm seeing upload speeds of approaching 500 Kbit/sec.

Factors to consider:
I've got a decent internet connection - 'fibre to the cabinet'.
My country probably has good international internet links, and my ISP has good peering agreements with the international carriers.
I get those good connections only if one computer is contacting GPUGrid at a time. If two request a connection in quick succession, the second fails and has to back off until the line to Barcelona has been clear for a couple of minutes.

I have Charter cable internet with a hard-wired LAN.

I believe the US is likely to have good international internet links. Is your country better?
How do you know what "peering agreements" your ISP has???

With several dozen rigs running 24x7 on GG and faster WUs I constantly have several ULing & DLing simultaneously.

I only have 3 Win7 rigs left and they all have chronic problems keeping supplied with GG WUs. The others are all Linux Mint 19.3 and work like dreams, including the ones I recently converted from Win7 to Linux. Also, it's impossible for me to view these web pages using a Win7 computer but it works ok but slow for Linux.

The only thing that correlates with my problem is Windows 7.

We have symmetric (935Mbps) fibre optics internet connection in our flat, but it made no difference regarding the traffic between my computers and GPUGrid when my ISP changed my old VDSL connection (15/50Mbps).

My country probably has good international internet links, and my ISP has good peering agreements with the international carriers.

Hosts located far far away could be handicapped by their distance from Barcelona. This does not limit the UL/DL speeds, only the initialization of the connection.
I'm located 1500km (932 miles) away from Barcelona. It takes 10ms for light to travel this distance back and forth and I got 72ms response time from www.gpugrid.net. The east coast of the US (New York) is located 6145km (3818 miles) away (41ms for light) and the west coast (San Francisco) is located 10286km (6391 miles) away (68.5ms for light) so it's impossible there to have that low response times from GPUGrid. This becomes important when a server can handle only a limited amount of connections (compared to the number of clients trying to connect to the server) simultaneously, as hosts with lower latency can ask for a free communication socket more frequently therefore they have better chances to allocate one so they could supplant the high latency hosts. To prevent this the server have to ignore requests coming from the same source for a couple of seconds which equalizes the chances of getting a free communication socket. This also serves as a DDOS attack prevention. I think this feature has too strict values applied at GPUGrid, especially for Windows hosts.

I get those good connections only if one computer is contacting GPUGrid at a time. If two request a connection in quick succession, the second fails and has to back off until the line to Barcelona has been clear for a couple of minutes.

I'm in the UK, and my ISP is 'BT' - that's part of the old nationalised British Telecom.

The nationalised monopoly telecoms provider was split up into two parts - BT as a consumer retailer fighting for its place in the consumer market, and Openreach as a (near monopoly) wholesaler for long distance telecoms and digital backbone services.

Although BT is not supposed to get any special favours from Openreach, I very much doubt that they would have made a decision to move away from their former partner when choosing backbone and peering partners. On the few occasions when I've used tracert to troubleshoot a bad connection, it's been clear that my international calls are routed through Telehouse London - our capital city's primary switching centre - and directly on to equivalent switches in the destination country. I've seen other people post some very strange routes reported by tracert.

Good point. You're thinking of an internet standard - was known as 'RFC 1323', though that has now been updated by RFC 7323

The Windows documentation is at Tcp1323Opts That's written for Windows 2000 server (!), but the core underlying technology has barely changed from WindowsNT to Windows7 (and probably beyond). You simply need to add a registry entry in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters, name 'Tcp1323Opts', type DWORD, value 3.

BUT: that helps (greatly) with the flow of traffic over a congested internet connection. It helped SETI@Home a great deal back in 2013, before they got an updated link. But it does NOT help with establishing the initial connection to the server, which I think is where many of the GPUGrid problems arise.

There are more network settings available in Win7 than in Ubuntu (at least that are easily accessible). I sometimes have better luck turning flow control off, and there are others relating to power-down, packet size, etc. that are inclined to cause problems if given a chance.

But in general, my Win7 machine is working fine.

Look in Device Manager/Network Adapters, and right-click on you adapter.
Then go to Advanced. You can spend some interesting time with it.

I think you should also restart networking services to apply these settings (better restart the PC).
I did it on one of my Windows 10 hosts, we'll see if it helps.

Also, in some particular cases, changing BOINC Client's HTTP 1.1 default format to HTTP 1.0 could help in troubleshooting connections.
This is achieved by adding the following line to cc_config.xml file in <options> section:

<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>

It is described here:
<http_1_0>0|1</http_1_0>
Set this flag to use HTTP 1.0 instead of 1.1 (this may be needed with some proxies).

I've tried both of these and rebooted my Win7 computer. I've yet to see any change but best to wait until the dust settles from the server reboot.

I don't understand a thing you guys are saying but I'll try it. Please let us know if these changes should be reversed.

I found something by accident that may have been the cause of my not being able to access these web pages via Win7 chrome browser. I clicked something that opened the chrome password manager and noticed that there 2 entries for GG. I deleted one and now I'm back. Still have the pregnant pauses and reloads but it's working as well as it ever did.
