So, as said a couple of weeks ago we would like to upgrade in the near future to CUDA2.2.

This has the effect that only the most recent driver (above 185.xx) would then work.

Any problem with that?

I need a couple of days warning to flush the cache and upgrade the driver. If you can pick a date and let us know when please. Also what will the minimum driver version be? 185.50?

Sure, we can fix a date. Let's wait some more comments.

I have tried with 186.xx under windows xp 32 and it works. We will do some more tests on other drivers.

We will probably go to CUDA2.1 fully (compilation and libraries). For limitation of the BOINC client it was not so yet.

Tests show that it runs on new drivers 186.xx and old drivers newer than 180/181 at least.

This should be the safer move for now.

Message 10987 - Posted: 6 Jul 2009 | 15:15:13 UTC

Two remarks from my side.

1. It is now summer holiday season in the northern hemisphere, so many take 2 to 4 weeks off, away from home and their PCs. So the switch date needs to be some weeks ahead of now.

2. More importantly, there is the Linux users. The standard Ubuntu 9.04 driver is still 180.44, not good enough for CUDA 2.2. However, from what I have been reading the 185 and 186 series for Linux seem to create quite some trouble, meaning that Linux arguably is not ready yet for the transfer to CUDA 2.2. Also, changing non standard drivers under Linux is a bit more difficult than under Windows.

My recommendation would therefore be to consider to holdoff the switchover till Ubuntu is ready to switch to a 185 or better series standard driver.

Switching too soon or too abruptly might lead to a significant loss of contributing PCs and therefore defy the benefit of the upgraded app.

Hint - a possible workaround to not loose the users with older "outdated" drivers would be to have 2 apps available with an opt-in preference box for the new CUDA 2.2 capable app. Variations on this theme are possible.

For your consideration.

Kind regards

Alain

PS - and already tomorrow my GPUGRID cruncher will be out of physical reach for me :). Happy holidays.

As we are just moving to cuda2.1, we will probably upgrade this week.

If you have driver newer than 180.xx for Linux and 181.xx for Windows, there should be nothing you need to do. Of course keep an eye on it if you can.
(These have been already the suggested driver version of gpugrid for months now).

The advantage is that the new application will run on 186 driver too.

[EDIT: In fact it does not. GRRRRR]

I would suggest a news saying "We will switch to blablabla in the next 2 days".

I think more people see news than read forums...

I try to test newer version of nvidia drivers.
With 185.18.14 and boinc 6.4.5 linux version, all my work units left in errors.
Actually, I use 180.29 version of nvidia drivers.

We are still testing cuda version and driver issues.
Is anybody able to run now on 185.xx?

The problem seems to be more serious. It seems that there is an incompatibility between the BOINC client and drivers 185.xx. We have submitted a bug report to Anderson.

All stopped until further notice.

i'm able to run on 185.86 no problems..... i have cuda toolkit 2.2 installed.

186.18 was a problem for me though..

q6600, gtx 260, vista 32-bit. running 6.6.28 but did run 6.6.36 and it works fine under that boinc release version, but i like 6.6.28 more as it's a little more stable and doesn't throw me a crazy error in messages.

It might not matter all that much for a while -- the server has been out of disk space for 6 hours or so -- not seen any notice that folks who handle the project are in the loop of this though, which is kind of disappointing.

Coming back to the problems with the driver. We can reproduce on all of our machines Linux64 and Windows Vista 32.
It happens on any version of the BOINC client with the new driver.

I could add a beta application compiled with CUDA2.2 for you guys to check.

What, you mean you don't hover over the server 24/7? <smile>

I figured as much, and noted it on a couple of other threads.

And yes it looks to be fixed. Thanks for that.

What about XP?

I'm using XP SP3 32-bit w/ 185.85 w/ BOINC 6.5.0, for about a month and a half. I have gotten some errors, but generally maybe 1 or 2 / week (out of 25 or so WU's). It's been over 5 days without any error, so maybe it's better. I do OC some, so I don't know if that leads to the occasionally error or something else is the cause.

I am running Vista 32 SP1 / 185.85 / Phenom2 955BE 4Gb / 9800GTX+ 512Gb

Happy to run something (at my risk of course - no worries there) if you want me to

Had some recent hassles over last 2/3 weeks, couple of download failures - and a problem vis memory triggered blue screens. The latter turned out to be the Card memory clocked too high, I turned it back to stock 1100X2, and kept the shader etc o/c'd and all been well since.

I had been wondering what was going on with my Linux installations. Sabayon 4.1 64bit stopped working with Gpugrid after the upgrade to the 185 Nvidia driver as did Suse Linux 64bit. Windows XP x64 is working very well with the 186.18 Nvidia driver. In fact, the Windows XP x64 is more stable and uses less resources than it did with earlier versions of the Nvidia driver.
My Vista 32bit installation never worked well with Gpugrid.
I had switched to running Gpugrid with Linux previously because that had been the most stable and productive OS for Gpu based applications previously.
I look forward to the Linux issues being resolved.

What about XP?

BOINC dev is trying to debug it. So any help is appreciated.

I had been complaining about the 185.X series on 64-bit Linux since it was released in April. Only recently has Nvidia admitted there was an issue with the driver.....

Nvidia Forum

I don't know if the 185.X series will be fixed or if they'll skip it and go to the 190.X series.

Just installed the latest 186.18 driver on my two machines.
One with XP Pro 64 w/260GTX card and one with XP Pro 32 with a 384mb 9600GSO card..
Both appear to be working fine.
Will follow up tomorrow if any issues.

Hi GDF,

I'm wondering if you might be better off skipping 2.2 all together and going to 2.3. See this message thread.

You are running the beta app aren't you? The "stock" app (acemd 6.64) we know doesn't work with later drivers.

I've been helping Movieman on another forum. He's running 6.6.36 and 186.18. Things seem to be working ok now, so it's wait-n-see atm. Hopefully everything will continue ticking away....

Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice re good Boinc/Driver combinations.

My current system is Win XP64, Boinc 6.6.28 and 186.18 drivers on an i7 with 3 GTX295's

The system runs one instance of GPUGRID (6.64) fine but subsequent units fail with a computation error almost straight away when they run on the other GPU's. All the GPU's are recognised by Boinc and work fine on Seti so I am a bit stumped with this problem.

Cheers, Simon.

I don't have any experience with XP64 as I run the 32 bit version of XP on my rigs. I run the 182.50 drivers which seem to be stable with GPUgrid.

You might want to upgrade your BOINC client to 6.6.36 or 6.6.37 as they did a couple of cuda fixes (to release video ram) in later versions, which may be part of your issues. I have 6.6.37 running on all my machines.

As for Seti, yes it seems a more forgiving cuda app (it was ported by nvidia). It doesn't seem to care what version drivers you run. GPUgrid are more particular, hence the attempt to get to a cuda 2.2 app that runs with "current" drivers.

I am having problems with GPUGRID with drivers 185.18.08 in Linux. Is there anyway I could contribute to getting this issue fixed? I have experience developing CUDA programs and cross platform compiling.

So it is a problem with the drivers? Is there any information about what is happening with the driver that is causing this problem? It could be useful to know as I am having problems with one of CUDA programs and it could be related.

Yes, the 185.X series does not work with GPUGrid. Revert to the 180.X series drivers until there's a fix.

Anyone tried the 190.X series yet? I'm going to try cranking out this last WU before I try it myself. Talking to the guys at forums.nvidia.com they said the 190.X initial release still had the bug, but I'll try it anyways just to see.

The frustrating part of all this is Nvidia initially kept blaming my configuration until someone else said they were having a problem. They never did get it through their thick skulls that the 180.X series work, and the 185.X series does not work regardless of the configuration. Only when I asked them what the results of THEIR OWN TESTING was did I get a responce that it was in fact a bug in the 185.X series, but they still blamed the GPUGrid programming as part of the problem.

Makes me long for and ATI card....Oh wait, not really......:-/

It does not work for gpugrid because we are the only project on Linux.
Even substituting the application with a bogus cuda_malloc causes the problem.

They try to optimize resources, if it clear that there is a problem they will try to fix it. So, your posting on their forum is quite useful. Keep doing it.

Actually where you posted exactly? Let's write it here.:)

Here's the post on the Nvidia forms where they admit there's a problem.....from "Netllama" @ Nvidia Corp. I keep asking about progress, but so far, they just keep releasing more crap. Also, in the reply is my original bug reports I posted on NVNews boards. Go ahead, pile on and pester them, maybe it'll get done quicker....

I didn't read this thread before I joined, so just went ahead and attached anyway. Had been running driver 185.85 so I could use the CUDA 2.2 DLLs (rt and fft) at SETI: no problems here at all.

Yesterday I upgraded to drivers 190.38, and CUDA 2.3 DLLs for SETI. Task 1006526 was run with the 190.38 drivers from start to finish.

Hosts are Windows XP SP3, 32-bit, with BOINC regularly upgraded to test new releases - I'm at v6.6.37 at the moment.

We had many reports of "driver errors" in the optimisation community at SETI - most of them were resolved when the hardware was returned under RMA. If the hardware and cooling are up to scratch, the new drivers work fine, even here.

Of course, that's not to say there aren't problems with the Linux drivers - but let's keep the two issues separate.

Is the move to CUDA 2.2 going to work for Linux? The 185 and 190 series drivers do not work with GPUGrid on Linux. Are we just "out" until NVIDIA gets off their rear ends?

It seems that we were able to hack it. I have just upgraded a new Linux application. It's an incompatibility between the driver and the way boinc execute the application. Setting the PATH fixes it.

OK, here's an important update....I was able to get the 190.18 driver to start crunching successfully under openSUSE. Just not under any incarnation of the release openSUSE 11.1. I am now testing release 11.2 Milestone 4 from http://software.opensuse.org/developer. You will need to install the kernel packages listed on this openSUSE/NVIDIA page to get the 190.18 driver to sucessfully compile, however, I am now running the CUDA 2.3 version on openSUSE, so at least I won't be left behind after this weekend's swiutch.....;-).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

No, I tried 190.18 on SUSE 11.1 before I decided to try Gentoo Linux. After that failed abysmally (yes, I'm a linux-lite person ;-) ), I tried Fedora 11, after I couldn't log into that installation as root, I downloaded openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 4 because I really didn't feel like reinstalling 11.1, which I knew was a problem, and then having to re-install KDE 4.2.4.

So far, my 9600 GSO is up to 14.573% and the task should be complete by tomorrow.

I would have really liked to try Fedora 11 a little more, but the restrictions through the GUI were killin' me.

Its happening to 4 cards that have the new 185.18.14 drivers.
None of them are overclocked, I thought you couldn't overclock GPUs in linux.
All are running fedora 11 x64 and all worked fine with 180.22 drivers.

Is anyone successfully running the new drivers with fedora 11 x64?

I'm currently running 185.18.29 on my Suse 11.2 Milestone 4 installation. I was running 190.18 as of yesterday when 185.18.29 was released. So far so good.

Prior to switching to Suse 11.2 M4, I was running Suse 11.1, and the 185 and 190 series drivers NEVER worked correctly on that version of Suse.

Is there a possibility of setting up a small partition on your hard drive to test the Suse 11.2 M4 installation to see if this configuration of software would work with your hardware?

a bit more progress to report

This on a GTX295 running Fedora 9. It has just now completed its first WUs since upgrading the drivers to 185.18.14.

I am running Suse 11.2 Milestone 4 with the beta 190 driver. The fix/workaround for Gpugrid and BOINC works and is stable. I had to delete the old work and settings and reset the project to get it to move forward. If you have any remnants of the old work units or settings, you will need to detach or reset to get rid of them. Detach may be better since it erases the old files.
Good luck.

Is it abnormal for the boinc manager to report driver version 0? I have Fedora 11 x64 on a 8800GT. It recognizes the card fine though. Reason I ask is, that it errored out just now on a workunit after a short time (1 hour maybe). And it used to work fine before the upgrade to 185 from 180.xx.

I did uninstall the old one although a kernel upgrade got involved and i had to uninstall and reinstall the 185 driver a few times. But I dont remember how boinc manager reported the driver version when it worked fine.

When I look in the NVIDIA control manager, it reports the correct driver version, 185.xx. I will detach and re-attach as suggested here, to see if it helps.

you will need to detach or reset to get rid of them. Detach may be better since it erases the old files.

ok, my LD_LIBRARY_PATH trick didn't work for the 2 remaining machines :(

I've now detach/attached them, we'll see what happens tomorrow when they get more WUs
thanks for the tip

Dude! How'd you find that release so fast? It wasn't posed on NVNews yet.

PS 185.18.31 seems to run the best of all the current 185/190 releases so far.

Pure luck, I wanted to check, which version I was downloading yesterday, and to my surprise the release date was Juli, 31st...

I hope for some improvements compared to *.29 version, because all of my WUs failed with client error so far.

Yesterday I downloaded the 190.18 beta drivers for Ubuntu 9.04, 64-bit. My first WU with these is has just finished successfully. I did have some trouble installing them though - I had to remove all traces of previous Nvidia drivers before they would run without problems. After many error messages during install, they appear to be ok now.

Hi Lazarus,

can you give some details, which files etc. I plan to install 190.* drivers, because all the latest 185.* drivers cause client errors.

To be honest, I'm still relatively new to Linux myself, so it may have been more luck than judgement. I got a bit annoyed with it after the 3rd failed attempt, to install 190.18, and went through and totally removed anything starting with 'nvidia'. I didn't just "uninstall", I "removed completely". As far as I am aware the 190.18 download contains everything necessary for a complete install from scratch so, I figured, why leave anything there to get messed up.

During install, I got a ton of error messages about not being able to write to, or find, certain files so I assume it wrote all new files because it all loaded successfully and works great now.

Sorry I can't give you a more tecnically precise run-through. By that time, I had reached the point where I was going to completely reinstall Ubuntu and start again.
