Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone can help me out with a little problem im having getting BOINC to run on my PS3. After installing the Flash drive version of yellow dog on a newly formatted and partitioned part of the hdd, I cannot get it to boot to a GUI. I get the text of linux booting, first the two penguins where it hangs at kboot for a sec or two and then the six smaller ones, as the boot continues. My problem occurs when linux tells me this

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3) Built-in shell (ash)
ENter `help`for a list of built-in commands.
/bin/sh: can`t access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs)_

The last underscore is the command prompt. This is where it stays with out loading BOINC it seems?

So is this normal? If not how can I fix it?

Background info, using a sandisk cruzier mini 512mb flash formatted to FAT32 (I tried FAT and NTFS to no avail), updated the PS3 to the latest version accessible from the web, the PS3 itself is a 40gb version with a faulty DVD player I picked up off ebay for BOINC purposes.

I`d love to get this bad boy up and running, all help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Umm, I'm a little bit condused. ;)

Have you downloaded the PS3GRID Live Linux, OR Yellow Dog Linux?
The Live Linux is based on Debian as far as I know, that would explain the shell output you posted here.

Just in case you mixed up the instructions for the Pendrive Linux and the YDL install -

Here are the instructions for the Live Linux
and
here are the instructions how to install Yellow Dog Linux.

I never used the Live Linux, but what happens if you type

startx
?

Hi Stefan,

I am using the live linux version, sorry for the confusion. When I type startx i get

/bin/sh: startx: not found

followed by the command prompt.

FWIW I have tried installing the live version with formats of both the PS3 and the flash drive twice now with the same result.

Hmm, I'm sorry but like I said ealier, I never used the pendrive linux, so I'm not a big help here. I think they uploaded a new version recently, maybe this is causing the problem, but I don't really know.

Maybe someone else can help you more?

Is there a reason why you don't install YDL on your PS3? It's really not that hard to do that...

The DVD drive of this PS3 is not currently working so I don't believe I can. The largest flash/pen whatever drive I have is 512mb. So its either use the supposedly supereasy live version or get a new Blueray player

I had problems getting the Live USB to re-install recently after a crash. The latest download of the Live USB version didn't work for me - although I had different issues to yours. However, I did have a previously, pre-latest update, version of the download hanging around on my PC - which does work.
Perhaps there are issues with the latest version - don't know if prior versions are available somewhere on the site - if they are, try that.

We have updated the live image. You should update the firmware of your playstation 3.

The Firmware on my PS3 is 2.43, which I believe is the most current version. Ive tried formatting and reinstalling three times now with no success. I`ve even tried downloading the live image from two different computers and copying the files on two different flash drives. It always hangs at the same place.

I confirm your problem. I've reproduced it (firmware 2.43, current live image on server) and it hangs at the same. However, I've been managed to run before an, in principle, previous version of the live image I had, and the NEW 2.43 firmware.
We'll check again the current image version. Thanks.
