I tried to post several times, but the spam filter (?) would not accept this.
I sent an email in hopes that went through.
Short version:
My wish is for a combined Q-A and Message board, so there is only one place to visit and read - respond to message instead of two separate areas.
Projects that do this seem to have better participation.

I agree with Krunchin-Keith.
They have been joined as a test in \"Forum and help desk\".

Well that sort of works, but not what I think I was wexpecting.
The other projects do away with the Q&A style altogether and just add those topics as topics in the regular forum. I would guess you could in some way move the threads to preserve the already asked questions.
If I start at the combined area.
If I enter a topic in the Q&A section and then click on the Questions_and_Answers link at I end up back in the single Q&A forum and not the combined.
Same goes for the message boards, once I enter into a toptic and then click the link back to message boards I no longer have the combined only the previous single message board topics.
This I think will confuse people.
[edit]
I think if you created the topics that are currently in the Q&A section in the first section, you then can via moderator choices move the threads, one at a time to the new topic. Once all the threads are moved you could delete or diable the entire Q&A section altogether. Make a backup first just in case.
If you create the topics, I spend the time and do the moving part.
I create a test thread in Q&A and then move it to Numbercrunching jsut to be sure it works.
Now layout
Message boards:
-Topic-
Science
Number crunching
Questions and answers
-Topic-
Platform-specific problems:
PlayStation3
General issues:
Getting started
Preferences
Wish list
Web site
Should look like:
Message boards:
-Topic-
Discussion:
Science
Number crunching
Platform-specific problems:
PlayStation3
General issues:
Getting started
Preferences
Wish list
Web site
I would also add some popular topics to the Discussion section that users like such as
Cafe PlayStation - Meet and greet other participants
Team talk - Bragging and recruitment |

We will try to merge the two forums later, but for now this system allows allows to check both forums at the same time.

Actually I\'m kind of getting use to the way you did this. Its not bad, only a little different from other projects.
Maybe instead of trying to merge the two, a link could just be added to each of the two sections to take you back to the combined sections. Kind of link the link in message boards that takes you to Q&A. And Q&A needs a link to take you to message boards. This would make navigation easier.
In messge boards there is this link:
If you have a question or problem, please use the Questions & answers area instead of the Message boards.
so
Q&A needs a similar link
To view Science or Number crunchin forum use Message Boards.
and both need a link
To view main Forum and Help Desk.
Any thought on this ? |

Yes please! There is no way to get back there directly. Currently, you have to click on \"Return to PS3GRID main page\", and then click on \"Forum and Help Desk\", to get back to the combined summary.
I am adding this meaningless text to get this post past the SPAM filter....ignore. I am adding this meaningless text to get this post past the SPAM filter....ignore. I am adding this meaningless text to get this post past the SPAM filter....ignore.
That didn\'t do the trick. Now I am adding more text to see it that will do it. And some more. And some more.
Edit: Finally had to cut out some of the quoted material from KK\'s post. I had already trimmed it to the relevant lines. But apparently, that still wasn\'t enough.

It appears you did some combining or else my mind is plyaing tricks on me again.
I forgot about this, Guy (Tutta55) found a way to combine the threads very easily.
This was suggested at MalariaControl.net and they did it very easily.
The easiest way to do this, is to edit the \"category\" table of the MySQL database manually. For instance with phpmyadmin. Just change the \"is_helpdesk\" value of all records into False (0), and voila. If you wish you can also change the sort order according to your wishes (the \"orderID\" field)
This can move the \'catagory\' headers too that are now left behind in the old Q&A section.
Then just manulaly comment out the links to Q&A from the message board page.
Sorry I forgot to post this earlier. |
