Dear Volunteers,
with this letter we would like to ask you for more donations towards the GPUGRID project. By January 2009 we would end a grant for one of our two senior researchers as at the moment we do not have the funding to continue it.
In order to maintain the GPUGRID project scientifically and technically, we need you to support us until we have managed to attract new funds. The amount of money necessary for one entire year is approximately 50,000 Euros, but any donation received before the end of the year will contribute towards extending the research contract. The amount is calculated on a base salary of 30,000 Euros, plus taxes and University overheads (20%).
Why should you support us?
Decide a research project!
PS3GRID/GPUGRID was instrumental for the technological break-through of releasing the PlayStation and the graphical devices (GPUs) into BOINC. Hopefully with your support we will be able to continue to do so in the future and provide that technological edge to distributed computing which you are using every day.
We do so because our application, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, is really computationally intensive. It would not make any sense to run all-atom MD on a single CPU and even on GPUs we will always need more computational power. On the other hand GPUs have allowed us to simulate unprecedented levels of molecular trajectories which are giving us the possibility to quantify molecular interactions and provide important knowledge towards new biomedical approaches and diseases. We have so far worked on proteins related to Alzheimer, heart arrhythmia, HIV and schizophrenia.
We plan to extend these studies and to start new ones with your support.
As this fellow will be supported directly by GPUGRID volunteers, the donor with the highest donation will have the opportunity to decide one disease on which we will try to contribute with our expertise and the top computational infrastructure provided by GPUGRID. This is your opportunity to start your own research. We will report to the volunteers on the progress of this research by providing reports as we would do for other funding bodies. In this way the interaction between volunteers and GPUGRID will be even stronger and could deliver very important outcomes in terms of science and society interactions. Through our studies on molecular dynamics we will seek to provide the highest impact towards the cure of the chosen disease.
How to donate?
You can donate any amount. The amount of funds required is such that it will be impossible to get there with just little donations, so while we encourage everyone to participate we really emphasize that we need some strong support. To donate simply go to: http://www.gpugrid.net/gpugrid_donations.php or contact us at ps3grid@gmail.com.
The highest donors will appear on the front page of gpugrid.net unless they would like to stay anonymous. On the 31st of December 2009 we will communicate with the highest donor to learn whether they wish to specify one of the research themes. As it stands if someone is able to provide the entire support alone, then they are automatically entitled to do so. Please contact ps3grid@gmail.com if you need more information.
Thank you very much!
What have we achieved so far?
Born as PS3GRID, we were the first BOINC project to deliver a client and an application for the Playstation3 using Linux as the host operating system. Our applications are always exploiting the hardware very heavily, with CELLMD, our molecular dynamics application we were able to run on Playstation3 15 times faster than a standard CPU. It is probably fair to say that without PS3GRID, there would not be a version of BOINC for use on the PS3.
The performance of the PS3 was crucial for delivering all-atom molecular simulations and allowed us to use BOINC for simulations which were before only run on supercomputers. We now have the possibility to exploit distributed computing to study molecular processes involved in diseases and possible drugs which could interfere with the causes of the disease. With PS3GRID we have studied methods for computing these interactions efficiently on a membrane pore. The final results have been recently completed and submitted for publications: T. Giorgino and G. De Fabritiis, Convergence of the potential of mean force computed through microsecond-scale bidirectional steered molecular dynamics, (2009).
In August 2008, again our project, by now doubled as GPUGRID, delivered the first application for Nvidia GPUs, again way before any other BOINC project, substantially contributing to the development of BOINC for GPUs with D. Anderson. As always, from the very beginning our application was top optimized achieving on high end GPUs the performance of at least 20 CPUs. The scientific validation of it was available via the scientific paper (so that you can be sure that the flops of your GPUs are sensibly used): M. Harvey, G. Giupponi and G. De Fabritiis, ACEMD: Accelerated molecular dynamics simulations in the microseconds timescale, J. Chem. Theory and Comput. 5, 1632 (2009).
GPUs are a really innovative hardware for scientific applications which will affect the way computational science and for us medical applications are developed: G. Giupponi, M. Harvey and G. De Fabritiis, The impact of accelerator processors for high-throughput molecular modeling and simulation, Drug Discovery Today 13, 1052 (2008). GPUGRID tries to be at the forefront of this new technological wave.

I'd really love to see cancer WUs being crunched on my gpus, but I probably won't have the highest amount of money donated...
A good way to get more donations would be to accept paypal! |
|
|
|
Create app for ATI gpus then you will have more people cruning and more people that will be interested in donating money to your project.
Really guys... if F@H is doing the same hob as You do and they ware able to create the app for ATI gpus. Why don't You give it a try?? The more people crunche for You. the faster the progres of the project, and the more people will donate. |

Hi Tom,
you can create a group of donors for cancer maybe.
We will try to implement this in the donation form.

Hey,
I donated a few minutes ago using paypal and specified cancer as a research proposal.
Do I get an e-mail from you confirming that you got my donation or is there a special sign in my profile that I donated? (like a crown on seti)
Thanks |

Actually we have a 'crown' ready to be used if wanted.
We wanted to know if you'd like to automatically have displayed the crown for every donor.

I'd suggest you do similar to seti and offer a show/hide toggle

I say yes! |

Do you have a plan how much money you need? And how close are we?
Maybe you could add something like this to the donate-page:

A possible source of a large donation:
Global Impact Award
http://www.nvidia.com/object/global-impact-award.html
There are two threads about this award:
GPUGrid Cafe / NVIDIA Global Impact Award
Number Crunching / 150 000 $
None of them contains any useful comments.
You can download the nomination form from here.
It is not a simple form, as far as the requirements go in its 3rd page:
I. Abstract:
Provide a high-level abstract of the work using language accessible to a layperson.
The abstract should focus on the problem, and how the work and its results had an impact in the area of focus. (max. 100 words)
II. Project Details:
1. Describe the field of the work as it applies to this award. What are the key problems in the field and how has visualization or computation been used previously (if it has) to address the problem? (max. 200 words)
2. Describe the specific problem solved by the work. (max. 300 words)
3. How did the work address this problem? How did the work advance the state of knowledge or practice in the field? How have the results been leveraged by others in the field or in a related area? (max. 400 words)
4. How, specifically, were visualization or computational methods applied to the problem addressed by the work? (max. 400 words)
5. How does the solution differ from other approaches to the problem? (max. 200 words)
6. How was NVIDIA technology used in the work? (max. 400 words)
7. How long did it take to complete the work? At what date was the work completed? (max. 100 words)
8. Tell us about the experience and the skills of the team that completed the work. (max. 200 words)
III. Endorsement:
Each application may be accompanied by up to three endorsements.
Each endorser should explain why they believe the project is worthy of recognition and identify any role played in the project.
The endorsement should be provided as a letter in PDF format or as an email, and can be included with the application or sent separately to globalimpact@nvidia.com.
Each endorsement should include the following information:
• Name of endorser
• Title
• Institution/affiliation
• Email address/phone number
• Name of nominee
• Endorsement (up to 200 words)
Most of the information required above could be extracted from the project's website, so I think I will gather it in the weekend.
I am open for any suggestions or contributions (especially for the endorsement section). |

I made a cash donation a while back and it went through as a normal donation like any other way of simply making a payment for something with a credit/debit card. Since then I have come beck thinking I wanted to make a new donation or set up a recurring donation. I do not understand the new format of "Registering people" at different levels of amounts of money for an "availability of years".
Like if I want to donate 70.00€, I make it 2 10.00€ and 1 50.00€ 'registrations' and hit Next, it wants me to fill in names and e-mail addresses for each "Attendee". What is the donor attending and what is the attendee registering for? I don't understand this.
And if I did want to set up an automatically recurring donation monthly, how would I go about doing that?
Also, I have over 42 bitcoins which I have considered for donation since they have gone up in price since I purchased and want to donate the increase, but when I click on the Bitcoin link on the Donate page, it leads to http://www.donateathome.org/ which is a dead page.
I understand the hardware and the Amazon Smile/Affiliate donation methods.
And, of course, I understand the donation of our GPU time to the actual project via the BOINC software.
But maybe someone can take the time to explain all the individual ways someone can actually donate to the project and the ways by which those donations can get from the donator to the project for use. And maybe put better instructions on the donation page that actually tells the potential donor what they are doing and how to do it?
Thank you.

I have suggested trying to raise funds via Bitcoin Utopia several times and have always received little-to-no response. Milkyway has raised over $3000 in this manner. Please consider it |

Hello,
I have a few questions concerning donations. A while back, I've made a donation with my email linked to this account. Today, I tried making another donation, but it wouldn't accept my email because it was used before. When may I use this email again?
For now, I have used an alternative email of mine and donated 10 euros (around 13 USD for me)
It'd be nice to use my current email again sooner rather than later. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

I can obviously determine from the record that almost two years have passed since a comment has been added to the FORUM on the subject of DONATIONS . May I assume therefore that adequate funds are available or approved for both current operations and plans for the future.
A personal comment and observation: I consider GPUGrid.net to be without challenge as the premier GPU-only supported research project in the BOINC distributed computing environment.
Appreciative: BET of Central Texas USA. |

Forgive me if there was an explanation posted elsewhere as to its incomprehensibility... but what is up with the donation page? It indicates that it's an "event" starting Apr. 22 (in 12 days; been this for weeks) requiring "tickets". There's a login for some reason, and I can't even do that without registering and that's greyed out.
Now that I've migrated here from the SETI@Home diaspora, I just wanted to throw a few € at the project to keep the lights on and the work flowing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |
